He featured it several time in his choral-orchestral work “St Matthew’s Passion,� each time with a different harmonization in order to depict the development of the passion narrative. In my piano arrangement I stayed very close to the original harmonization while still telling the story of the crucifixion – while the first verse is played in a medium register (the way you’d normally accompany your congregation) the second verse takes you in the lower register, at a slower tempo, and with minimal harmonization. As we get towards the end of this arrangement you can imagine Christ giving away his last breath on the cross. Performance time 2'42.
