Sitting on a balcony, overlooking the surf and sand of Anna Maria Island off the west coast of Florida, is extraordinary. Boats pass, people stroll, birds swoop, fish jump, tides move in and out, and clouds move along. All this contributes to the seashore landscape seen while sitting on a seaside balcony. It is a respite, like an oasis. That is the story behind Balcony Oasis.
Balcony Oasis (key of A flat major), begins with an expressively delicate A-theme; the right-hand melody is alluring and eloquent. The B-theme develops into a dramatic use of chords, dynamic chamges, and harmonies. When the A-theme returns, the music transports the listener back to the original serenity of the balcony scenery. With plenty of opportunity for musical interpretation, this piece is a joy to learn and play.
