The work was performed and recorded by Percy Grainger, a fact that was used as marketing on the cover of the 1918 publication by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. About the work, Dett wrote:Juba is a social group-dance that involves stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time. At least one-third of the dancers keep time in this way, while the others dance. Sometimes all will combine together in order to urge on a solo dancer to more frantic (and at the same time more fantastic) endeavours. The band usually consists of a single fiddler perched high on a box or table; who, forgetful of self in the rather hilarious excitement of the hour, does the impossible in the way of double stopping and bowing. A word of warning in regard to the tempo. Do not take it too fast! Much of the dancing in the river bottoms is done with a grace and finish that a Presto tempo never could suggest.R. Nathaniel Dett

This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6.  Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a dance for a ballerina. It is the third movement in The Nutcracker pas de deux. This pas de deux is from Act 2 of the 1892 ballet The Nutcracker. It is danced by the principal female dancer. The number was choreographed by Lev Ivanov to music written by Tchaikovsky. Choreographer Marius Petipa wanted the Sugar Plum Fairy's music to sound like drops of water shooting from a fountain. Tchaikovsky found the ideal instrument to do this job in Paris in 1891. It was then that he came across the recently invented celesta. This instrument looked like a piano. It sounded like bells. Tchaikovsky wrote, [The celesta is] midway between a tiny piano and a Glockenspiel, with a divinely wonderful sound. He wanted to use the celesta in The Nutcracker. He asked his publisher to buy one. He wanted to keep the purchase a secret. He did not want other Russian composers to get wind of it and ... use it for unusual effects before me. Tchaikovsky introduced the celesta to Russian music lovers on 19 March 1892 when the Nutcracker Suite was performed for the Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg. The instrument is forever identified with the Sugar Plum Fairy. It is heard in other parts of Act 2 of The Nutcracker besides the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance.[3] The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one of the ballet's best known musical numbers.
