SKU: A0.972635

Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Ragtime,Standards. Score. 10 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #3022927. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972635).

These seven short pieces were composed in the early months of 1976 as imitations of some of the composers and musical styles of the early twentieth century. They were never performed or published at the time. They are useful as didactic studies for student pianists. The seven pieces are
I. Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale
II. Prélude and Nocturne in Modes
III. An Impression of Impressionism
IV. An Imitation of Roy Harris
V. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters
VI. Ragtime Bitonality
VII. Diatonic Waltz

Program Notes:

The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy.

The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat.

An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises.

An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing.

Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist.

Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality!

In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago.

About the Composer: James Siddons is a composer and pianist as well as musicologist. His research guide to the music of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu was published in 2001. For more information, see www.JamesSiddons.com

By New Christy Minstrels. By Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 2 pages. Timothy Stapay #841772. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1247227).

This is an arrangement of Chim Chim Cher-ee from the Walt Disney movie, Mary Poppins.

Chim Chim Cher-ee is a song from Mary Poppins, the 1964 musical motion picture, and also is featured in the 2004 Mary Poppins musical.

The song won the 1964 Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2005, Julie Andrews included this song as part of Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs.  The song was written by Robert B. Sherman & Richard M. Sherman (the Sherman Brothers) who also won an Oscar and a Grammy Award for Mary Poppins' song score.

The song was inspired by one of the drawings of a chimney sweep created by Mary Poppins' screenwriter, Don DaGradi. When asked about the drawing by the Sherman Brothers, DaGradi explained the ancient British folklore attributed to sweeps and how shaking hands with one or touching their sleeve could bring a person good luck.  In their 1961 treatment, the Sherman Brothers had already amalgamated many of the P.L. Travers characters in the creation of Bert. His theme music became Chim Chim Cher-ee.

Lyrics:

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you
Or blow me a kiss
And that's lucky too

Now as the ladder of life
'As been strung
You may think a sweep's
On the bottommost rung

Though I spends me time
In the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world
There's no 'appier bloke

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

I choose me bristles with pride
Yes, I do
A broom for the shaft
And a brush for the flume

Up where the smoke is
All billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars
Is the chimney sweep world

When the's 'ardly no day
Nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow
And 'alf way in light
On the roof tops of London
Coo, what a sight

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
When you're with a sweep
You're in glad company

No where is there
A more 'appier crew

Than them wot sings
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim cher-oo
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim chim cher-ee chim cher-oo.

Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Arranged by Thomas Ling. Classical,Film/TV,Romantic Period. Score. 4 pages. Thomas Swee Chin #982912. Published by Thomas Swee Chin (A0.1399635).

Originally scored for the orchestra, Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette is a captivating musical composition that skillfully blends elements of drama, mystery, and whimsy. Composed by Charles Gounod, this piece is perhaps best known as the theme music for the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

The composition opens with a solemn and haunting melody played by the woodwinds, setting a somber tone reminiscent of a funeral march. The mournful melody is accompanied by a steady, solemn rhythm in the lower registers, evoking a sense of reverence and solemnity.

As the piece progresses, Gounod introduces variations on the main theme, adding layers of complexity and intrigue. The music builds in intensity, with dramatic flourishes and sudden shifts in dynamics, creating a sense of suspense and tension.

Despite its mournful undertones, Funeral March of a Marionette also contains moments of whimsy and playfulness, reflecting the quirky and eccentric nature of its titular marionette. These lighter moments provide a stark contrast to the more serious elements of the composition, adding depth and dimension to the music.

Overall, Gounod's Funeral March of a Marionette is a masterful composition that combines elements of drama, mystery, and whimsy to create a captivating and evocative musical experience. With its haunting melody, dramatic flourishes, and unexpected twists and turns, it remains a beloved and iconic piece in the classical repertoire.

This deeply moving hymn by Georg Neumark is presented here as a gently flowing intermediate piano solo. The subtle weaving between minor and major tones creates a hauntingly beautiful, yet calming instrumental arrangement. This is a wonderful selection for times when a musical meditation is desired such as communion, invitation, or prelude. Duration 2:45.

After a faith-building experience when Georg Neumark claimed the promise found in Psalm 55:22, he wrote the lyrics to this song: If you but trust in God to guide you and place your confidence in him, you'll find him always there beside you to give you hope and strength within….

Composed by Gabrielle Felicita Chen. Contest,Festival,Folk,Holiday,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score. 9 pages. Gabrielle Felicita Chen #646246. Published by Gabrielle Felicita Chen (A0.1041503).

“L’amore di Kebo Iwa†simply means ‘the Love of Kebo Iwa’ , which is inspired from Indonesian Balinese folk music. It is usually played by the instruments called Gamelan. Bali is an island in Indonesia rich with cultural traditions that are very much rooted in myths and legends. After understanding deeper of the legend of “Kebo Iwaâ€, I was so drawn to the character and the plot that I decided to tell the story in my piano composition. I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. One of them is to apply the Pentatonic ‘Balinese Pelog’ Scale in B flat Major, which represents the majority of the Gamelan sound that is usually transcribed into Western notations. Below is the synopsis the “L’amore di Kebo Iwaâ€. A Once upon a time, in Bali, there was a husband and a wife who dearly wanted to have a baby. They prayed to God for a very long time. Finally, God heard their prayers and blessed them with a baby boy. But there was something special about this baby boy: he was very big- a giant baby. They named him Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa grew up with a good heart and became a gentleman. He was a kind hearted giant; he protected the village dearly. One day, the King of Majapahit from Java wanted to conquer Bali. He had heard about Kebo Iwa and knew that his army would lose to Kebo Iwa. B Therefore, the King of Majapahit tricked Kebo Iwa. He invited Kebo Iwa to Java island, promising that he would arrange a wedding for Kebo Iwa to marry his daughter, the beautiful Majapahit princess. Kebo Iwa was so in love with the princess, so he happily travelled to Java island. C After he arrived in Java, the King of Majapahit asked a favour from Kebo Iwa to dig a well, with the reason for it being the dry season. Kebo Iwa then sincerely gave some help and started digging a big, giant well. D However, the King Majapahit never meant to deliver his promise to Kebo Iwa. Instead, the King Majapahit commanded the troops to cover the well with mud and boulders. But when Kebo Iwa realized, it was too late. He was already in the position that was far too deep below - at the bottom of the well. Kebo Iwa then cried loudly and sadly with a broken heart until his last breath. He was buried alive. Soon after that, the Majapahit troops attacked and conquered Bali. E At last, the well was covered and grew a hill of flowers. To this day, the Bali villagers still remember Kebo Iwa as their hero. To honor him, they erected a giant statue of Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, Bali, as a memorial.

Now Whiskers has come across this mysterious house in the forest, he approaches it with curiosity and cautiousness. This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.

He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

SKU: A0.792820

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Elliot Chasanov. Romantic Period. Score. 10 pages. Gordon Cherry #6681391. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792820).

Die Nonne und der Ritter (The Nun and the Knight), Opus 28, No. 1 for Alto & Tenor Trombones with Piano accompaniment by Johannes Brahms was written as part of a four-song set published in 1863 and dedicated to Mrs. Amalie Joachim a noted German/Austrian contralto. She was the wife of violinist Joseph Joachim and friend to Clara Schumann and Brahms.

The song, beautifully arranged by Elliot Chasanov for Alto and Tenor Trombones with Piano accompaniment, is subdued, haunting and very lyrical. The form is A-B-A with an agitated middle section returning to the mysterious quiet of the beginning.

The almost 6-minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

SKU: A0.741168

Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by Anne Britt. Romantic Period,World. Score. 5 pages. Anne Britt #3421189. Published by Anne Britt (A0.741168).

This famous classical piece was composed by Edvard Grieg as part of the play Peer Gynt, and is played as the title character, Peer Gynt, in a dream-like fantasy, enters the troll Mountain King’s hall to face a great crowd of troll courtiers, gnomes, and goblins. The Mountain King sits on his throne, with crown and sceptre, surrounded by his children and relatives. Peer Gynt stands before him. There is a tremendous uproar in the hall and these lyrics are heard:

Slay him! The Christian man’s son has seduced
the fairest maid of the Mountain King!
Slay him! Slay him!

May I hack him on the fingers?
May I tug him by the hair?
Hu, hey, let me bite him in the haunches!
Shall he be boiled into broth and bree to me

Shall he roast on a spit or be browned in a stewpan?
Ice to your blood, friends!

This arrangement for piano solo presents the theme of Grieg’s piece in a tango setting that is creative, fun, and much more accessible to the intermediate pianist. 5 pages. Performance time: approximately 1:48.
