Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.835809

Composed by Paul Burnell. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Paul Burnell #3602773. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835809).

Frayed End, composed by Paul Burnell in 2000.

For amplified piano with echo effect

Duration 4:45

The piano should be amplified and the sound output processed with a delay/echo effect (four repeats) spaced at the quaver. At crotchet = 126bpm this is equivalent to a delay of 230 milliseconds. Each echo should be slightly quieter than the last but clearly distinct.

The performer/sound engineer should feel free to experiment with the spatial location of the original amplified sound and each delay. However, sounds should not be spaced in any way that fragments the combined rhythmic 'flow'.

The piece may be played on an electronic keyboard instrument, and the left hand part may be played/doubled with a bass sound such as electric bass guitar.

Programme note:

'Frayed End' was composed by Paul Burnell in 2000. It is for amplified piano with an echo effect. A recorded version of the piece appears on the album 'Leaving the Party on Pluto'.

Reflections on a Haunted House, by Paul Burnell.  Composed 2021 for Piano.

Movements may be performed individually.

'Reflections on a Haunted House' comprises sixty short pieces, thirty of which are for piano.

The piano movements may be performed as solo items, or alternately performed with pre-recorded backing tracks.

If all piano movements are performed as a solo set without backing the total duration is 29 minutes.

The titles of the piano movements are derived from the short story 'A Haunted House' by Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). The story was first published in the 1921 collection 'Monday or Tuesday' and later in the 1944 collection 'A Haunted House and Other Short Stories'.

The backing tracks are included on the album 'Reflections on a Haunted House' (IPBO11) released in 2021.

SKU: A0.835726

Composed by Paul Burnell. Contemporary. Score. 7 pages. Paul Burnell #58889. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835726).

Composed 2015 For keyboard and/or other instruments in four parts. Duration 3:15 approx. The keyboard may be a piano, or any other keyboard instrument such as harpsichord, toy piano, electric piano etc. adapting the playing style to interpret dynamics or note durations where these are otherwise not possible to achieve. The sotto markings in the keyboard part indicate the right hand crossing under the left hand. Programme note: There are several definitions of 'pacer' including a horse bred or trained to pace, used in some types of racing, and a fast bowler in cricket. Each of the three 'Pacers' composed by Paul Burnell are at a single insistent tempo - or pace - the second being Allegro (a quick, lively tempo).

Subside

(from choleric to phlegmatic and back again)

Composed 2004

Duration 6:00 approx.

For ensemble and percussion

This work was written in February 2004 in response to a call for pieces on the theme of 'The Four Temperaments'. This was part of CoMA’s Open Score project, made possible with funds from the Esmée Fairbairn and PRS Foundations.

Programme note:

'Subside' outlines a slow mood change from controlled violent anger to tenderness, then a sudden flip back to anger again.

Technical notes:

Percussion is essential, with the choice of instruments left to the discretion of the player(s), using the directions in the one-page score as a guide. The percussionists play on the 2nd and 4th beats throughout the piece - accenting the 4th beat.

Other instrumentalists are divided between Parts 1 - 4. Parts are available in numerous transpositions - though it should be possible for instruments in C to read from the score.

The dynamic markings in the score apply to all the parts.

The size of the ensemble is not indicated, but ideally there should be enough players to allow for a reduction in the number of people playing two bars before letter D, and a further reduction to solo instruments six bars before letter E. However, this guidance can be ignored and the piece played by quite a small group; for example - violin, piano and percussion, or organ and percussion.

If flutes and violins play Part 1 - the flutes may play an octave higher than written until letter A, and the violins may play tremolando until letter A.

Keyboard players can play combinations of all parts. In addition, or alternatively, the keyboard players may double parts 3 and 4 an octave lower than written where indicated by the horizontal brackets, for example in the third and fourth bars.

The allocation of instruments to the parts is left to the discretion of the musical director / performers - but should take account of the dynamic markings and expression indications.

The last 2 bars of the piece are played 5 times in total.

SKU: A0.835729

Composed by Paul Burnell. Contemporary. Score. 9 pages. Paul Burnell #59647. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835729).

Matrices was composed in 2013 for piano and/or other instruments. There are seven movements with a total duration of approximately ten minutes. Although the piece is suitable for performance by piano, other instruments may be used instead or in addition. Other instruments may play in a different octave if this aids playing at the indicated tempi and dynamics. Programme note: The word 'matrix' (plural 'matrices') has several meanings, including a mass of fine-grained rock in which gems, crystals, or fossils are embedded. The subtitles of the seven movements of this piece refer to geological layers around the South West of England and particularly in the coastal area known as Black Ven, between Lyme Regis and Charmouth in Dorset. This area is noted for its fossils, including those collected and documented by Elizabeth Philpot (1780–1857) and her sisters and Mary Anning (1799-1847).
