Composed by Ben Dockery. Children,Contemporary,Jazz,Standards. Score. 42 pages. Ben Dockery #3539271. Published by Ben Dockery (A0.693021).

These twelve short pieces for piano were inspired by the sounds from my childhood, namely the musical themes from games played on eight-bit consoles like Nintendo. Whether or not you share such memories, I’m confident we can find common ground here; each piece attempts to see and hear the world from a child’s imaginative, wonder-filled perspective.

By Margery McKay. By Richard Rodgers. Arranged by Paul Taylor. Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Paul Taylor #5759653. Published by Paul Taylor (A0.803336).

Climb Every Mountain was first heard in 1965's hit musical entitled The Sound of Music. The recording is performed by 78-years-young Batya Bloomberg, a retired grocery clerk and online piano student of mine residing in Skokie, Illinois. This selection depicts the rewards of perseverance and hope in  the Von Trapp's family daring escape from Nazi-occupied Austria during the second world war.  Its message is still universally relevant for those of us living through the current pandemic. This arrangement for solo piano includes the text, chord symbols and some interpretive markings. .

Composed by Russian Folk. Arranged by Paul Taylor. Folk,Historic,Multicultural,Standards,World. Score. 2 pages. Paul Taylor #989970. Published by Paul Taylor (A0.1407293).

This popular work song from Russian folk history has been used to depict hard work  in movies, cartoons and plays. Here it is presented  for the early intermediate pianist. The sailors on the boat can be heard singing their song of work, very softly as the boat approaches the people on the land. As the boat gets closer, the dynamics increase in intensity and as the boat passes away, the dynamics decrease to reflect the passing of the ship. Some pedalling and phrasing suggestions are given as well.

Composed by Anonymous. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. Christian,Gospel,Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 4 pages. Paul Thurmond #4969095. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828261).

Tune: LET US BREAK BREAD

Use: Prelude, Offertory, Communion

This song is an African-American spiritual. Some of the text may date back as far as the 18th century. Although it has been used in communion since at least the Civil War, that may not have been its original intent.

I have heard lectures given by researchers who claim that many African-American spirituals contain coded messages, intended for slaves, about secret meetings, clandestine worship services, and escape plans. Some songs are even said to contain maps.

The texts are innocuous on the surface, so as to not alert the slave owners. Some of the double meanings seem obvious in retrospect:

When Israel was in Egypt land,
Let My people go.
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let My people go.

And:

Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!
Steal away, steal away home. I ain’t got long to stay here.

In Let Us Break Bread Together, this curious line may have a double meaning:

When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun

Communion needn’t take place at daybreak, nor while facing east. The lyrics could be a pointer to a specific time and place for a prohibited meeting.

Whatever its original meaning, this and many other African-American spirituals are now an important part of many worship traditions.

By Frank Sinatra. By Claude Francois, Gilles Thibault, Jacques Revaux, and Paul Anka. Arranged by Mario Stallbaumer. Pop. Score. 3 pages. Mario Stallbaumer #959766. Published by Mario Stallbaumer (A0.1375154).

With this sheet music, you can play My Way on the piano!

It's an accurate, carefully created piano arrangement of the legendary recording by Frank Sinatra.

My Way was composed in 1967 by French songwriter Jacques Revaux, with lyrics by Claude François and Gilles Thibaut, originally titled Comme d'habitude (As Usual).

Canadian singer Paul Anka heard the original French recording on vacation that same year, and decided to re-write the song with English lyrics - My Way was born!

Frank Sinatra recorded the song in one take in December 1968, and the rest is history − it became his signature song and a huge hit after its release in the following year.

Needless to say, the iconic pop song makes for a wonderful piano cover!

Review of Seasons CD by Kathy Parsons (mainlypiano.com):

Seasons is a beautiful collection of original pieces by pianist/composer Sydney Stevens. Some of the pieces are solo piano and others feature duets with Mitch Iimori on English horn, oboe, and guitar (but not all at the same time!). The two musicians are obviously exceptionally comfortable and in tune with each other, and the results can be stunning. Very classical in scope and structure, the music is reflective of the natural surroundings of Ms Stevens’ home in the Colombia Gorge region of northern Oregon. The first eight of the fourteen tracks make up the Seasons Suite, a group of lyrical compositions inspired by the various times of year in a remote area of eastern Oregon. The other six pieces also have themes of nature and serenity.

The Seasons Suite begins with Colors Change, obviously about the transition of summer into fall, but also about the concept of change as we grow. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling in the ceaseless wind of that area. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing!

In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite. On Summit, Iimori trades his woodwinds for guitar in a gentle, sweeping duet with the piano.

Waning Star is a gorgeous piano solo that has a peaceful grace and quiet serenity - a favorite. Reach For the Stars is a piano solo that has an uplifting sense of moving forward and reaching out. Dawn closes the CD with a warm and soothing confection. The piano is accompanied by light percussion, bass, and washes of synth strings. Full of hope and optimism without being sugarcoated, this piece is spellbinding in its gentle way.
