After finishing my service as a young missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a small group of us traveled from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. I fell in love with this beautiful city. This piano solo is a reminiscence of my thoughts of Rio. It is not traditional Brazilian music, but music by a North American describing his feeling about this Brazilian city. Note: the term Carioca is used to describe people from Rio de Janeiro.

Tune: HYMN TO JOY

Hymn to Joy is the main theme of the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most famous work, his Ninth Symphony, which premiered in 1824, only three years before his death. The tune has been paired with several different hymn texts, but the most popular one in most churches is Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.

Just six years later, around 1830, a young Polish composer living in Paris, Frédéric Chopin, composed his most famous work, the Nocturne in E-flat major. It’s a piece that’s beloved by pianists for its lovely melody set over a widely spaced accompaniment. The tune gets considerably more complex as it goes on.

My setting goes through the melody three times. The first and third sections are fast, and are built on a kind of arpeggio-pattern-with-a-melody-on-top that Chopin was fond of using. The slow section in the middle starts with a total ripoff of the opening of Chopin’s Nocturne; it’s even in the same key! Instead of Chopin’s melody, though, I use Beethoven’s, and develop the tune as Chopin did, beginning plainly, then becoming increasingly ornate.

This piece was a blast to write, and I hope you enjoy it, too.

Climb Every Mountain was first heard in 1965's hit musical entitled The Sound of Music. The recording is performed by 78-years-young Batya Bloomberg, a retired grocery clerk and online piano student of mine residing in Skokie, Illinois. This selection depicts the rewards of perseverance and hope in  the Von Trapp's family daring escape from Nazi-occupied Austria during the second world war.  Its message is still universally relevant for those of us living through the current pandemic. This arrangement for solo piano includes the text, chord symbols and some interpretive markings. .

Here is a piano solo version of Old Folks at Home, (Way Down upon the Swanee River) presented in the key of D and the Key of C. The arranger is committed to the idea that young pianists can benefit tremendously from experiencing their pieces in a different key. Of course, for recital purposes it is probably best to choose one or the other. One verse of text and one chorus appear in the event that the player would like to sing along.
