When my friend, the composer and pianist Neil Crossland, asked me to write a work for him to perform, he requested that I give the piece a distinctly Scottish flavour. Perhaps as a consequence, hailing from Scotland as I do, the resulting work is distinctly autobiographical in nature. This is a challenging piece, aimed at advanced players. The four movements reflect the preoccupations of four stages of (my) life as seen in hindsight. The word dimensions in the piece's title refers to facets of my own character. The first movement, Complications, represents the self-image of the young. The music is adventurous and academic, full of the potential of a life yet to be lived and the earnest self obsession of youth. The second movement, Romance, is the search for love, though seen through the lens of memory and therefore touched with sadness. The third, Transience, shows the uncertainties of middle age, so full of frustration and of nostalgia. This movement contains my setting of the Jacobian poem Will Ye No Come Back Again?. The last movement, Revelry, blows away the uncertainties of the third movement with the driving energy of a Scottish reel. Perhaps increasing age brings a certain perspective; what does it matter if you have more past than future? Just get up and dance and let Dr. Music sweep your cares away. The piece features a musical fragment (first heard in bar 26 of the first movement) which has been the cause of much amusement between Neil Crossland and myself over the years. Neil has been composing music since his teens but the art has only much more recently become a big part of my life. However, musical ideas have always had a tendency to come into my head and, several years ago, I decided to play these two bars to Neil. Every so often, in the years that followed, he would teasingly ask me how my new piece was coming on, knowing full well that I'd have to admit that my magnum opus was still only two bars long! By setting the melodic fragment at the heart of this composition I have finally ensured that he can tease me about it no longer. More importantly, I hope that Neil enjoys our little in-joke.The audio file for this work is beautifully performed by the work's dedicatee, Neil Crossland.

The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work.The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work.The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine.The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend.The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano.The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,â€� and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures.The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux.The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away.The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.â€� Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. This is my version of the classic tune performed by Richard Clayderman the iconic French pianist. I have done a complete departure from the arrangement he plays and done it as a slightly up tempo stride piano/ragtime piece. It's such a good melody I think it survives this treatment very well and sounds kind of cool, though I say so myself!I like to keep my arrangements as simple and easy to read as possible so I avoid pedal markings, dynamics and fingering all of which you'd struggle to find two piano teachers to agree on so  I leave them to the discretion of the individual pianist.If the intervals of 10ths are too big for your hands, as is often the case, they can be 'rolled' or just play the root note in octaves or even single notes.Please note I don't include notation for the other instruments on my YouTube recording it is simply a piano solo. It was written as a piano solo so it sounds perfect just like that.I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed arranging it. Best of luck.
