Each year, I eagerly await the Holiday season. Christmas & New Year's celebrations bring back a flood of memories. Memories about family, childhood and gatherings with friends. I remember my father making a Sunday meal after church and singing along to his favorite Christmas songs. There is the memory of sitting in a dimly lit room watching the bright lights of the tree blinking on and off. Our church choir singing beautifully on Christmas Eve is another heartfelt memory. While writing and arranging music for this Christmas album, I was grateful to dwell on so many treasured moments and it encouraged me to remember the most important part of Christmas. The reason for the season.....The Everlasting Light.

By Nat Cole With N. Riddle Orch. By Mel Torme and Robert Wells. Arranged by Thomas Gunther. Christmas,Holiday,Jazz. Score. 4 pages. Thomas Gunther Music Productions #913724. Published by Thomas Gunther Music Productions (A0.1325497).

Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas Gunther
The Christmas Song is maybe the most popular Christmas Song in the USA. Some know it as Chestnuts Roasted On An Open Fire or Merry Christmas to You.
The melody is absolutely beautiful, and the chord changes super interesting. I especially like Nat King Cole's version, which is in Db major. To make it easier for intermediate piano players I wrote my piano solo arrangement in C major instead. It is still challenging  enough.
The sheet music will be available for purchase at 2pm Chicago time on Nov 27.
About The Arrangement
The arrangement is written in jazz ballade style. It doesn't swing. I includes a fun double time improvisation section though which I made up on the spot during the second B section when I recorded the song. It is in latin style.
The arrangement can be performed with or without improvisation. Should you be a jazz pianist you could use the included chord symbols to make up your own improvisation.
About The Sheet Music
The sheet music is the exact transcription of my recording, including the improvisation part. (You can listen to it and see me perform in the video below.)
The sheet music contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings.
How This Arrangement Came About
May arrangement is heavily based on the Nat King Cole version. I love the ballade feel and the beautiful chord substitutions he uses in the orchestration. First I simply played along with his version in Db major. This helped me to figure out the harmony. Next I start thinking about the accompaniment. Now it is time to practice it. Once I have the arrangement figured out I start recording it a few times, listen to each version, iron out the edges. Now it is time to record the entire thing.
Recommendations For Learning The Song
I recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music.
I always think about fingering and sustain pedal use at the same time when learning a song. Smart use of the sustain pedal can really make it much easier to play.
Is This Arrangement For You?
This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who loves The Christmas Song. It doesn't matter would kind of pianist you are.
The arrangement is certainly for intermediate pianists and up. It is also beneficial when you don't have very small hands. Some chords in the left hand require a hand span of a 10th. However, there are ways to get around that by simply rolling the notes with the help of the sustain pedal.

Passacaille in G minor by Handel: This is the original Handel Theme in G minor with 4 of Handel's variations and the 2 variations from the recent popular Halvorsen version transcribed to G minor. My student liked the Halvorsen version but he was unaware that this was originally a piece by Handel. So I took my  favorite variations and original theme in G minor and combined it with 2 of the Halvorsen variations. The Halvorsen variations are in F minor, so I transcribed them to G minor. He performed it for an annual piano incentive program in New Jersey and it was well received and he got a lovely evaluation from the judge on his performance. The Handel in its entirerty, in my opinion, gets a bit too repetitive and so does the Halvorsen in its entirety. So combining a little of the new style into the Baroque style made for an over all more interesting perfromance. Nothing has been simplified. This is Handel and Halvorsen's writing, just put all in one key and does not include all their variations.

The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.

In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island” it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream” (sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthem”, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.

Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island” (to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephone”) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. The lyrics were written by Pitcairner Melva Evans with assistance from the local Seventh Day Adventist Pastor L. A. J. Webster in 1962 to be performed by the school children on board a visiting cruise ship, but the song became identified by residents as their unofficial anthem. Other songs, such as “The Goodbye Song” (written by Pitcairner Amelia Young), and the hymn “In The Sweet By and By” are considered unofficial “Pitcairn songs” at gatherings as well. (“Goodbye songs”, sung to ships as they leave the country, are a tradition in many Polynesian islands, and are part of the patriotic music of those countries.).

♫ piano solo arrangement of a public domain hymn
♫lyrics by Ellen L Goreh 1853-1937
♫ melody by George C Stebbins 1846-1945
♫ The author of the text was a native of India. She spent many years in mission work among the women of India, held in high esteem by missionaries of all denominations. Ira D Sankey writes “The hymn was first sung by [George Stebbins] as an offertory in one of the churches in Brooklyn, New York. It was often repeated as an offertory, and on occasions was sung in evangelistic services. But it had its larger introduction to the public during the All-Winter Mission conducted by Mr. Moody and myself in London in the winter of 1883–84, when I sang it frequently, as did Mr. Stebbins, who spent several months assisting in the mission.” The hymn spread all over the world. Hudson Taylor reported that it was a favorite of the missionaries in China.

By Stephen R Dalrymple. By Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by Edited by Stephen R Dalrymple. Romantic Period. Individual part. 5 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #5997057. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818321).

Prélude for Left Hand Alone (Classical Music for Tablet Series) by Alexander Scriàbin (piano solo) Opus 9 Number 1 - (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin [1871 – 1915] was a Russian composer and virtuoso pianist. Before 1903, Scriabin was greatly influenced by the music of Frédéric Chopin and composed in a relatively tonal, late Romantic idiom. Later, and independently of his influential contemporary, Arnold Schoenberg, Scriabin developed a much more dissonant musical language that had transcended usual tonality but was not atonal. He composed almost exclusively for solo piano and for orchestra. [condensed from Wikipedia October 2022] ♫ Prélude for Left Hand Alone belongs to the earlier period of his work. ♫ Edited for 10 inch tablet by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Performed by the Editor. ♫ I was introduced to this piece by my piano teacher, Jenny Wong, after injuring my right arm and needing to rest it. Compositions for left hand alone are valuable in developing and testing phrasing in the left hand. The most beautiful tone quality will be elusive if the left hand is weak in technique or phrasing. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. There are several programs available online that will allow you to separate this .pdf file into 2 .pdf files to make it more useful.

Composed by Juan MarĂa Solare. 20th Century,21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. Score. 19 pages. Juan Maria Solare #921371. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1335536).

Hommage to Ursula is a piano piece in memory of Ursula Görsch (1932-2023). The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.

The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.

The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.

The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.

To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:

A BCDE
A CEBD
A DBEC
A EDCB
A BCDE

This work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.

This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).

This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). It is up to the gentle pianists to risk experiencing the same as me.

* 'Das Ende im Anfange' reads the legend that can be read in the circle of tonalities reproduced by Johann Friedrich Michael Wiedeburg in his treatise Der sich selbst informirende Clavierspieler (Leipzig and Halle, 1765-1775, Verlag der Buchhandlung des Waisenhauses).
