AlÃa is a composition that was inspired by the type of modal melodies composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams collected from rural areas in England and Scotland. The simplicity of peasant life, coupled with its profound knowledge of Mother Nature, is reflected in the very cantabile melody that dominates this work. To honor the equally rich peasant cultures that still live in rural areas in my native Colombia, I have included rhythmic patterns extracted from the Bambuco, a syncopated, ternary musical expression that has resounded for hundreds of years amidst the beautiful mountains of central Colombia. - Alexander Klein.
