In 2012, Soundbrush Records started a regular Wednesday night performance series at the venerable Caffe Vivaldi in New York City’s Greenwich Village. This intimate venue was a place where the label’s recording artists could present new material, revisit old material and interact with each other in different musical combinations. Here is pianist, composer, and Soundbrush founder Roger Davidson and his Brazilian Trio, captured in the immediacy of live music making.

This is an arrangement of the  19th centruy hymn Sweet Hour of Prayer, attributed to William B. Bradbury.  It is suitable for prelude, postlude, or performance in Church services, combining the hymn tune with motifs from Giacomo Meyerbeer's hymn commonly set as Jesus Once of Humble Birth.  Both of these hymns have common usage in Christian congregations today, and will be particularly familiar to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Performance Practice:  This hymn should not be rushed but shouldn't drag either.  Markings are not included for damper pedal under the assumption that it's use should be rather intuitive given the harmonic rythum of the piece.  Occasional non-harmonic notes (mostly augmented 9ths)  in chords are intentional and should be present but not prominent--there to provide tension and color only.

Level: Intermediate level; great for a high school student recital, but could be a very managable piece for a college student as well. 

Composition notes: The first of a trio of pieces called Breathing Structures, 
this piece was written for and premiered/performed by Andrew Bren as part of the Cascadia Composers' In Good Hands program (where composers write custom works student performers). This is a expressive, post-minimalist influenced composition, with flexible tempos and dynamics. Great for students who are interested in late 20th-century/early 21st-century classical music influenced by Philip Glass, John Adams, Michael Torke, and Ludovico Einaudi. The following poem serves as the program note for this work: 

The Emergence 

Stepping out that place of hiding
An infernal state of comfort
With smothering holds of safety
Shielding from rays of lucidity. 

Stumbling forward
One step past
The formerly towering limit.

A rush of adrenaline
An urge of retreat
But staying firmly planted
With bristling follicles
And quickened breathing.

Transformation is jarring
Shedding skin is tiring
Yet soon will exhilarate
Releasing onward
Leaving old paths
As distant dreams

A solo piano piece intended to portray a conversation between two people, one seeking forgiveness and the other being the wronged party. Is written in a jazz-influenced, somewhat neotonal style and features a nested ternary (ABACDCABA) form to convey a conversational feeling. To be played between 110-120 bpm, with a rushed, hurried feeling and rubato meant to represent the emotion-charged words spilling forth from the lips of both parties.
