This is an Epiphany hymn that I set in the style of Handel's harpsichord variations. I recorded it on harpsichord, but it also works great on a piano.

The theme is stated plainly.

The first variation adds running eighth notes in the right hand.

The second variations switches the eighth notes to the left hand, and changes the harmony a bit.

The third variation adds triplets in the right hand, while the left hand plays the same pattern over and over, a technique known as a ground bass. In the recording, I play it using the lute stop.

The fourth variation is a sarabande, a slow dance in triple meter with frequent emphasis on the second beat of the measure.

The fifth and final variation states the melody in octaves in the left hand, while the right hand goes crazy with sixteenth notes. The first eight measures of the right hand are inverted and modified to form the second eight measures.

This arrangement starts out with the song's intro chords played as a syncopated vamp, further altered by a reharmonization of its original harmonies. From here, the arrangement continues by use of a pedal point on the tonic, on top of which the verse chords and melody sound. Throughout the chorus, the right-hand melody is mostly accompanied by a syncopated jazz waltz rhythm in the left. Concluding the arrangement, an extended piano technique is used by damping a string with the left hand that is being played on the keys by the right. Sounding not unlike a palm-muted guitar, this single repeated note gradually decreases in speed, in sheet music commonly notated as a feathered-beam figure.

Her Greatest Charm is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. I have turned this short 20 seconds ballad into a 2 minute boogie-woogie. I created a LH boogie pattern which continues the same for the long introduction with various pulsed chords over the top. The first section continues the same one chord boogie pattern and adds the 8 bar melody, with slightly altered rhythyms and articulations, above it, this section being repeated. For the second section I take the same 8 bar melody, back to the original lyrical rhythm and articulations, and reharmonize with changing chords still in the boogie pattern. When I Bid The World Good Night is a piano solo arrangement of the 1902 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  I freely arrange this piece, only keeping the general shape and rhythm of a short sample of the melody.  I change the Time Signature from the original 6/8 to 4/4, then I set it to a LH boogie jazz pattern and create new jazz bridges and a unique outro.  Just roll it!

Can't Help Falling In Love was made famous by Elvis Presley on his album and film Blue Hawaii. My arrangement takes it from a 60's pop song to a gentle jazz ballad. It is totally reharmonized and has a fresh new feel. The melody is the same, except it has a new Time Signature. The song was originally in 6/8 but I have set it in 1/2 in order to get the pulse and phrasing I want. (Yes, 1 minim/half note per bar.) The original accompaniment was broken arpeggios, but now it is all about the rich new blocked chords. With repeats and a D.S. I have covered all 4 verses and bridges. Enjoy a fresh take on this forever classic.

In The Meadow is a piano solo arrangement of the 1925 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  This arrangement only uses one bar of the Jacobs-Bond song then goes on a jazz riff, then quotes a second bar of the original song, then goes off on another riff.  The same two bars get sporadically reused twice more in the piece to bridge into yet more riffs.  A fun jazz piece that is both lilting and passionate while it constantly shifts moods.

Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things�, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.� And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.� Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!� As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

A MARINER’S TRILOGY

A three part contemporary suite filled with imagery of a boat and a mariner caught in a storm out to sea.

I. Majestic Tide

Song describes the storm blowing over, waves subsiding, the sun peeking through, and safe sailing ahead.

Fair winds, following seas is a term used by mariners, who use this term synonymously with the points of sail below a beam reach, since the wind direction is generally the same as the sea direction. Therefore, the phrase Fair winds and following seas, implies that a vessel will have good winds, and not have to pound into the waves. – Wikipedia
