The piece captures the life cycle of this celebrated rara avis in a triptych arrangement of three “panels.� Entitled “Embers�, the first panel depicts the transformative energy of a lively hearth fire throwing off sparks, erupting with sudden pops of pine pitch, crumbling into hot dusty heaps. The central “Elegy� reaches back to the comforts of traditional piano sound, arriving like the work of memory. The final panel of the triptych is punningly entitled “Meter-morphosis�, linking Ovidian myths of transformation with the musical measure of the bar line. The piece is in three movements: Embers (still glowing) - Elegy - Meter-morphosis.

While at Eton he won the Rowe Cup for junior pianists, and in his final year performed Weber's Konzertstück with a chamber orchestra. As an undergraduate he studied piano with Hilda Bor, and won a piano class, adjudicated by Herbert Howells, at the Willesden Music Festival. From 1988 to 1991 he held a Perrott Warrick Studentship from Trinity College, Cambridge, and he has a doctorate from Oxford University. From 1996 to 2000 he was a College Lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford. Elegy is one of four piano improvisations created by Dan Chadburn at Bias Studios (Springfield, VA) in May, 1998, and recorded directly onto his award-winning debut album, solo piano. The album includes nine additional pieces selected from more than 300 piano improvisations Dan first created in 1996, each one originally played on an electronic midi piano into a computer's memory using MOTU's Performer software, and subsequently transcribed for the recording. In her review at MainlyPiano.com, Kathy Parsons wrote, Dan Chadburn's debut recording is a soaring collection of thirteen wonderful compositions and improvisations. Some solo piano albums seem a bit empty and in need of accompaniment, but Dan clearly indicates why solo piano can be the most expressive of any musical medium.
