This piano waltz inaugurates a series of dance portraits commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) in Tallahassee, Florida, and its performing company, Pas de Vie. It was originally composed in December 1995 as a portrait of the extraordinary dancer, teacher, and choreographer Gwynne Ashton (d. 1998), the dedicatee, and was presented to her as a Christmas present in an abbreviated form. The French words of its title mean on the beach and allude to one of Emile Waldteufel's most delightful waltzes (Sur la plage, op. 234; 1883), which endures as a beloved ballet with Ashton's choreography. Similarly pensive, elegiac and retrospective, the new piano work uses original thematic material throughout and lasts approximately two-and-a-half minutes.

El día que me quieras (English: The day that you love me) is an Argentine tango with music by Carlos Gardel and lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera. It is considered one of the most popular songs of the 20th century and one of the best Latin songs of all time.[1] Originally featured in the 1935 film of the same name, sung by Gardel himself, it became a heavily recorded tango standard, even by artists outside of the realm of tango. It has subsequently been covered by various artists such as Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias,[2] Michael Bolton[3] Roberto Carlos, Raphael de España and Shlomo Idov who translated the song to Hebrew. The song was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.[4] El día que me quieras was honored at the 2014 La Musa Awards as La Canción de Todos los Tiempos (The Song of All Times).[5] It was among the tango standards selected by Plácido Domingo for his 1981 album Plácido Domingo Sings Tangos. In addition to Domingo, the song has been covered by operatic tenors including José Carreras,[6] Juan Diego Florez,[7] Christian Ketter,[8] and Alfredo Kraus.[9].

The tune is unusual in having a flat seventh degree in several phrases, implying the mixolydian mode (actually, natural minor in the third phrase). This lends a special character to the music. In the second verse, and again in the last, I fashioned a florid LH accompaniment for the tune. In keeping with the flat seven, I use it again in the last measure (ending on a D-flat 9). Sorry, no resolution.

This movement is the fourth of five dance portraits (collectively titled Musique SABA) commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) and its performing company, Pas de Vie, of Tallahassee, Florida. The piece originates from 2003 when composed for the dancer Seah Hagan's first piano lesson, devoted to just two notes, at age four. Fittingly enough, the left-hand part embeds musical ciphers suggested by the syllables of her name, as Se-ah using forms of the pitches C and A, including in a simple way playable by the novice. Meanwhile, the right-hand part, as if for the teacher, quotes Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers--a borrowing itself punning since drawn from Casse-noisette (1892). The new, playful waltz lasts about forty seconds.
