The artwork is a haphazard abstract representation of the coastal town of Porthleven, near Helston, on the fringe of the Lizard Peninsula. The painting depicts the town's unusual feature of three inter-connected harbours, as well as a cross on a tower, which likely refers to the church. The work is formed in three sections, as a relation to the three harbours. It explores the notion of bell-tones, and even of change-ringing, in reference to the aforementioned church bell tower. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for more advanced pianists, including students and professionals. Lacerta quietly basks amongst the members of the Perseid Family of Constellations in the northern hemisphere. Originally called Stellio by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius, it is a small faint constellation that represents a starred agama, a grey lizard with yellow or orange spots on its back or side that can change colour slightly in response to temperature or mood. This piece is built on a scale devised by Messiaen which proceeds in a pattern of tone then two semitones, and opens and closes with his Chord of Resonance built on this third mode of limited transposition. Delicate staccato contrasting with legato playing requires a sensitive touch. For Kay - Because the Lady doesn’t necessarily like Milk Tray! Back in the late 50’s when I was a kid, my elder brother and I used to spend numerous hours playing in the woods and as a team we’d catch anything that was catchable, such as lizards, newts, frogs, shrews, slow worms etc. One time our cousins Angela and Kay came to stay and just for a laugh, we acquired an empty chocolate box, added a few lizards, and gave it to Kay (who was 5 at the time). Clearly Kay didn’t appreciate how difficult it was to catch the lizards and reckons she’s been traumatised for the last 60 odd years. I keep telling her that I was only an innocent accomplice and my brother was the instigator.Anyway, this piece is for Kay with love to help ease the trauma.This piece requires at least a 76 note (6 octaves) keyboard. I would rate this as MODERATELY DIFFICULT, but very satisfying.
