The fun and fascination with disguising oneself to be someone else for a moment has been expressed many times in music through compositions such as Un ballo in maschera, Masquerade or Carnaval. In the humorous variations on a theme of Robert Schumann, Peter Wittrich lets the Fröhliche Landmann [Happy Peasant] slip into different roles and sets out with him on a journey through time from the Baroque to the modern era. In ten variations, Wittrich makes the Landmann familiar with the different styles and famous themes of the music epochs by treating Robert Schumann's popular theme contrapuntally in the sense of Bach, imposing Mozart's sonata form on it or letting the Landmann dance a proud polonaise with Frédéric Chopin. Der fröhliche Landmann also becomes a jazz pianist and improvises with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Petersen in a blues sound before he indulges, in a Grand finale, in the brilliant virtuosity of the 19th century together with Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Rachmaninov. Apart from performing the entire work, individual variations can be arranged in small cycles according to preferences in style, e.g. for Jugend musiziert, or counter-posed against the original work. This melody is a folk song from Somerset, recorded by Cecil Sharp, the famous collector of folk music. The story tells of a young lad who bids good-bye to his sweetheart and joins the Royal Navy. When he returns to England, he finds that she has married someone else, which he bitterly laments. This arrangement for piano solo is intended to be playable without difficulty by an intermediate standard player. The emphasis is on expression rather than technical difficulty.

The St. Anthony Chorale was famously used by Brahms for a lovely set of variations. Although he attributed the chorale tune to Haydn, musicologist are pretty agreed that it was written by someone else, though they haven’t figured out who. But the Chorale is lovely, and this arrangement for solo piano makes a moving processional for any occasion. It is in the key of Bb major, and easily playable by any advanced level pianist.

What a relief! It was just another squirrel all along! Whiskers and the other squirrel are cautious to meet each other but they walk up to each other slowly and carefully, ready to run at any moment in case something happens. Whiskers thinks to himself about all that fear and chaos he felt earlier that was all for nothing, he is very relieved to find out that the scary creature he was so scared about was just another squirrel.

Whiskers doesn’t have many other friends so he’s happy to find someone else in these woods to become friends with. The scary abandoned house that they’re in seems to fade away now that he feels comfortable with this other squirrel. What an adventure it has been so far, from finding this abandoned house to running for his life to making a new friend. I wonder what her name is?

Whiskers now begins on his curious adventure into the unknown. He begins carefully stepping through the forest with caution into unfamiliar territory, his ear pricked to listen out for any sounds that might be someone or something else. As he makes his way through the forest looking for something to explore, the wind begins to pick up. The trees move in the wind and the leaves rustle and fly around Whiskers which causes him to panic.

As the piece moves to a more active section with the use of semiquavers, Whiskers begins to run further into the forest, losing his sense of direction from the confusion caused by the wind and all the leaves about. Whiskers frantically tries to find his way back home but the wind grows stronger blowing more leaves around which makes it even harder to see where he’s going.

Eventually the leaves settle back on the ground as the wind dies down and comes to a rest. Whiskers has stumbled across something he has never seen before in this forest, a house. It looks abandoned and like someone used to live there many decades ago. He stops in his tracks to take a good long look at the mysterious looking house that towers before him.
