One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. A caveat: I have no delusions, and offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy and comfort to other technically challenged yet serviceable pianists such as myself. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

In 1957, Henry Onorati arranged the song for a recording by the Jack Halloran Singers, but it was not released in time for Christmas. The next year, Harry Simeone was looking for material to create a Christmas album, and Onorati introduced him to the “Carol of the Drum.” Simeone re-arranged the song, retitled it “The Little Drummer Boy,” and recorded it with the Harry Simeone Chorale on the album Sing We Now of Christmas. The song is the story of a young shepherd boy who joins the procession of the wise men and other humble admirers to the Savior’s manger. When the boy reaches the gathering, others present gifts, but all the boy can afford is his gift of making music on his drum. Over 200 versions of this song in at least seven languages have been written.In September 1977, an additional track was recorded for Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas television special, performed by Crosby and David Bowie. According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie balked at singing “Little Drummer Boy.” “I hate this song. Is there something else I could sing?” Fraser recalls Bowie telling him. Fraser, along with songwriter Larry Grossman and the special’s scriptwriter, Buz Kohan, then wrote the “Peace on Earth” lyrics as a counterpoint to “Little Drummer Boy.” Crosby performed “Little Drummer Boy,” while Bowie sang the new tune “Peace on Earth,” which they reportedly performed after less than an hour of rehearsal. Crosby never lived to see his performance on television, as he died a month after recording. The show aired in November 1977 on CBS.

I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas� for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.
