The melody is derived from Russian composer Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 1, Op. 10, Movement 4. In these variations, the opening eight-bar theme provided the inspiration for the work. Armenians identify with the theme as a patriotic song Zeitountsiner or Arevn Yelav, Zeitountsiner (The sun rose, people of Zeitoun). In this arrangement for piano, the five variations in D major are a step lower, suited for the intermediate player. The original key for orchestra is E major. Techniques of motivic development include changes in: style, tonality, harmonization, meter (5/4) and tempo. Polovtsian Dance No. 1 is included in Classical Interpretations Collection. Although the Polovtsian dances are included in Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor, he died before the opera was finished.  Its completion is attributed to Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.  Polovtsian Dance No. 1 includes the theme of the gliding dance of the maidens.  This theme has also been used in a popular song Stranger in Paradise from the musical Kismet.About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday.  She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S.  In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching.  She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred Music listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).
