Gilbert, their ninth of fourteen operatic collaborations. It opened on 14 March 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances. The popular overture contains several themes from the opera and makes an attractive piano solo lasting about 8 minutes.

It is a lively and compelling march that has been continuously popular with Protestant congregations for 150 years. The Salvation Army adopted it as a favorite processional early in the 20th C. This hymn is often sung at military funerals including that of American president Eisenhower in1969. Apart from its obvious martial associations, the song has also been embraced by political causes such as the American civil rights movement. It is arranged here as an Intermediate Piano Solo and is included in McIntire's series, Gospel Piano Series. It follows the pattern of most Savoy opera overtures: a lively opening (the melody of With cat-like tread), a slow middle section (Ah, leave me not to pine alone), and a concluding allegro in a compressed sonata form, in which the themes of How beautifully blue the sky and A paradox, a paradox are combined. The orchestral score is here reduced to solo piano.
