Swing Low, Sweet Chariot refers to the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to Heaven by a chariot.  The lyrics also contain a veiled reference to the Underground Railroad.  Spirituals were often sung as call and response:  Swing low, sweet chariot (Coming for to carry me home), Swing low, sweet chariot (Coming for to carry me home.) I looked over Jordan and what did I see?
