Unofficially part of the Alternate Universe Classical Music series, but created specifically for a short video game project, this is a series of twelve two or three-part inventions. While the original soundtrack uses retro chiptune sounds (mimicking the Mockingboard sound card of the early 80s), all these pieces are playable on the piano. They are all at varying difficulty levels as well, from intermediate up.

Fuego is a fast and rhythmic Latin jazz piece written for early intermediate students. It features an easy-to-play Montuno at the beginning before switching to a RH melody with LH bass note texture. Fuego primarily uses quarter notes and eighth notes. It is perfect for practicing eighth note subdivision and hand independence.

Don't let the introduction deceive you, Soaring On New Horizons is a lively and thrilling piece. After the first melodic section, listen for the arpeggios to take-off to the adventure on new horizons. A very artistic piece, Soaring On New Horizons is uniquely geared to performance in which both the music and the performer fly (or at least his fingers do).
Moreover, at a jaw-dropping finish, if fingers could fly, then they would have just dived into a stunning landing; and if they could breathe, they would most certainly be out of breath.

One musical work that greatly influenced and inspired many of the musical techniques was Scherzo No.2  by Chopin.

On the score side of things, 15 pages long, the music is in the key of E major and is mostly in 6/8 with many exceptions. Most arpeggios are written as a performer would efficiently play them (switching between hands)-- which makes the score an easier sight-read but also gives the appearance of choppiness rather than flow.

This piece is without a doubt an advanced piece mainly for one reason: speed. With a relatively high tempo, changes in meter make timing difficult, but the real challenge comes with the lightning fast arpeggios in the second section.

This is an intermediate piano piece that was inspired by a run through the park on a fall day. The song features the sound of the leaves falling and the brisk breeze blowing through the trees. Using a very common music format (into-A-B-A2-outro) this piece tells a sound story using chromatic runs, and switching between major and minor tonal centers. This late intermediate/early advanced level piece is quite a journey, written from the heart! Imagination beckons you to envision being in the depths of the mountain, listening to a rhythmic heartbeat, and eventually working your way out into the light through some channels of water. A great piece to practice different combinations of eight and sixteenth note patterns, switching from simple to compound meter, and bringing out the melody over the accompaniment in the right hand in the B section. Expressive playing is a must to capture the heart and spirit of the mountain.

This piece from the baroque period, a popular study amongst beginner pianists, was rearranged as part of my piano tutoring program in introducing progressing students to additional technical aspects: (i) accent, marcato, arpeggio, fermata, and turn (cadence) articulations, (ii) achieving legato through correct finger setting (double note octave passages, and sustained-note-finger-switching), (iii) finger independence through sustained chords with resolving cadence.

A frantic solo piano show piece ideal for recital or study. The arrangement begins in the key of C and progresses through Ab major and F minor before returning to the home key. My family love watching all the quiz games on the TV in the UK and ‘The Chaser'(ITV) and ‘Pointless'(BBC) are unfortunately both on at the same time. We find ourselves frantically switching back and forth monitoring the contestants progress. I imagined the whole procedure filmed in ‘silent-movie’ style and this was the result! All a bit pointless really….
