Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.741218 Composed by George Coles. Arranged by Anne Britt. Christian,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Anne Britt #5030273. Published by Anne Britt (A0.741218). The text to this hymn originated as a poem by James Montgomery, titled, The Stranger and His Friend. It was later set to music by George Coles, a New York City preacher, and adopted as a hymn by Christian congregations in the United States and the United Kingdom. John Taylor learned the hymn while serving a mission in England in 1840 and introduced it into the LDS church. It was a favorite hymn of the prophet Joseph Smith, who requested that John Taylor sing it to him in the Carthage Jail before he was martyred. The version he sang was actually set to a different tune that John Taylor wrote himself. This piano solo arrangement is based on the original melody by George Coles and received Special Recognition in the 2020 Church Music Submission. 5 pages. Performance time: approximately 4:10. She spent many years in mission work among the women of India, held in high esteem by missionaries of all denominations. Ira D Sankey writes “The hymn was first sung by [George Stebbins] as an offertory in one of the churches in Brooklyn, New York. It was often repeated as an offertory, and on occasions was sung in evangelistic services. But it had its larger introduction to the public during the All-Winter Mission conducted by Mr. Moody and myself in London in the winter of 1883–84, when I sang it frequently, as did Mr. Stebbins, who spent several months assisting in the mission.†The hymn spread all over the world.
