The second movement of Blaze's Piano Sonata in E Major No. 1, following A Look Into The Past, A Moment In The Present was primarily inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in F Minor No. 1 and Piano Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetique�. I gave it its name because I find it to be a very relaxing and dawdling piece. It reminds me of someone just lounging around and enjoying nothing but taking in the moment. The syncopated melody gives off the feeling that his thoughts are also jumbled together. He is not actively trying to achieve anything, but instead just letting anything come to him. It is supposed to contrast the first movement by being simpler and more relaxing (where the first is dominating and complex). I especially wanted a much more lyrical and monophonic (single voiced) piece to contrast with the polyphony (many voiced) and layers of the first.

This am improvisation on the C major scale for preparing the pianist for a practice session. In the 1950's it was very fashionable in the United States to improvise on scale practice almost as a protest to the rigidity of Czerny, Hanon,  Duvernoy, Kohler and other exercise masters.  An added attraction of exercises like this is that they give family members the feeling that the player Is serious about piano, making their study of piano well worth the price of lessons. :).

The 3rd and final movement to Blaze Scheuerman's A Journey Through Time Piano Sonata, A Struggle For The Future follows a conflict between two separate themes for control. Set in Rondo form, this piece tells an accurate depiction of a common day to day experience. We all in a way start off usually feeling fine like how the melody in the A Theme sounds, but then through the journey of the day meet some other conflict or competition that clashes with our calmness and causes an ensuing struggle. This piece was inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas, primarily Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetique�.

Written March 20, 2020, this is an original piano composition in the ancient Greek mode of D Phrygian. It is in a darkly reflective style. Some of the sounds in the melody and harmony you hear might not sound quite right because it is in neither major or minor. This particular mode is not used as much as some of the others because of the minor 2nd in the scale and because there is not a true dominant feeling chord because the V chord does not have a perfect fifth and is naturally a diminished chord. Sometimes I like to write a piece that is just an exercise in 20th century music theory utilizing the ancient modes. James Michael Stevens is a prolific composer residing in Nashville, TN and serves as the Music Department Chairman of Welch College.

Water is serene, soothing, calming, but also chaotic, unpredictable, and at times relentless. Follow the story of the song as you are taken on a journey. A personal experience inspired this dynamic piano solo. It begins with a simple motif that depicts looking out over the ocean which is then followed by getting into the water. The next section, also the longest, goes through the process of losing control to the water and the realization of possibly drowning. The frantic section is followed by a contrasting section, which imitates a lost and worn out feeling. This part demonstrates the feeling of helplessness and the acceptance that it might end, but is then followed by a phrase that is repeated in different keys. Finally, the triumphant section plays the previous phrase once more with fuller chords and a key signature, bringing back structure and sanity to this experience. Though, an accidental in this section leaves the feeling that tension may still be in the experience and that not all was fully well.

This solo piano piece provides a scenic description of autumn on a river, specifically River Philip in Rockley, Nova Scotia.  Bars 3 and 4 introduce the feeling of breathing cool, crisp fall air, after which the music settles into a more mellow feeling by bar 9.  At bar 13 the river continues to roll along, depicted by the eighth notes in the bass clef, while the pleasant fall atmosphere is remembered with the high treble clef notes.

The composer has provided a few tempo and expression markings as a guide, however the piece is meant to be played expressively with the moving flow of the music dictating the expressive nuances interpreted by the performer.  A You Tube link is included on this page to provide further imagery for the performer.

This piece is deemed to be at an intermediate level due to the difficulty switching between the treble and bass clefs with the left hand, while still keeping the tempo flowing smoothly.
