This is a great transposition exercise for the budding jazz pianist. The tune itself is short, but the harmonic language is rich with primary chords, secondary dominants ,  minor 7th chords and  half diminished 7th chords.  Although all twelve keys are not represented, the five keys that appear (C,Db, D, Eb and E) provide enough models for the pianist to go ahead and calculate the seven other keys that are not represented. As Bill Evans, the great jazz pianist demonstrated,  knowing a tune in all keys is a tremendous help for performing and understanding music.

This popular Christmas song, written in 1857 by William Studwell, is presented here in the keys of C, G, D, and A and is intended for the early, elementary pianist. There are fingerings and phrase marks and the left hand is restricted to the five-finger pattern of the key. The melody however, does movesfrom one position to another now and then, but not without helpful fingerings to get to the next position. .

This work of initiation to the piano was written for children with the purpose of captivating them to the charms of music. The five-fingers pattern on the white keys, on the black ones, or the two positions simultaneously, explores both the opposite and parallel movement of the hands on the keyboard and the independence of dynamics and sonorous layers.

Bliss – Freely

Bliss has an improvisational quality exploring different ideas and sounds (e.g., the glissandi in bars 9 to 12). Try to create a sense of happiness, free from the burdens of everyday life. Feel the relaxation and contentment that transcend everyday experiences. Take the listener on a journey that sinks into the peaceful and calming atmosphere you create. Okay, maybe that's a little deep, but you get the idea.

Here are some suggestions for executing the glissandi. 

All glissandi move from lower to higher notes. Execute them with a technique comfortable for you.

A technique of all five fingers in a rolling motion can play bars 9 through 12.

For bars 14 and 22, if you use the five-finger technique, experiment and decide what notes you should omit for a pleasing sound. Use the back of the fingers or the fleshy part of the thumb techniques to stop more accurately on the D flat note.

This little tune is a great vehicle for introducing the primary chords in the first five keys of the circle of flats. The familiarity of the tune and the exact repetition of the chord pattern in the keys of C G D A E and B will give the beginning  pianist the basis for harmonization and transposition. Automatic hand movement to find the primary chords in the left hand is an essential skill for acquiring anunderstanding of key signatures and their relationship to the circle of 5ths. .

2015 Piano Contest The five finger positions of C#, G# and D# major and minor are used throughout the accompaniment here, as are the positions of G and C. The sharp keys use the tones immediately below the low note and above the high, whilst the white key positions use the opposite. Hence, the sound is thus shaped by the keyboard. Melody, often in octaves above, with octaves in the bass anchoring each iteration of the FFP at hand. Dur about 6 mins. Advanced level, more intermediate at a slower tempo than indicated.
