I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. This work is primarily inspired by the 2nd movement  of the String Quartet op. 76/3 (also called  Kaiserquartett) by Joseph Haydn. The Variations on the Austrian National Anthem are a conscious stylistic copy,  using the typical phrases and ornaments that we know from many composers  of the second half of the 18th century. The basic theme is generally attributed  to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Recent research provides evidence that the composer Johann Baptist Holzer could be the original author of the anthem. Holzer was a contemporary and lodge brother of Mozart.
