Simply a three-tone scale, nothing more to it than that! highly pianistic, very mirror-able, and able to display sudden and dramatic shifts in harmonic colors while keeping a steady cascade of notes in motion. Octaves in the left hand make both a bassline and a melody underneath these arpeggiated scalar figures. The piece is in 12/8 time, as is often used for these three-notes up-three notes down, and back again kind of elements. The mirroring here is less topographical than the other pieces, but the contrary motion and mirrored fingerings persist, as does the strict use of the intervals at hand. Approx running time is 3 mins 15 secs. A Fun piece for the display of the sound of the piano, and the display of the ability of the player to maintain a flowing 1/8-note triplet motion through many different shades of major and minor, lydian and phrygian . Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. The whole step and the major third are quite euphonious, and even fit into some keys where their usage in a tonal setting facilitates mirror fingerings and symmetry. E major, having four sharps, is just such a key. The scalar passages are strictly mirror-fingered. The octave displacement of the note in between the root and 3rd of the scale is also used throughout, in either hand. Tempo here is only a suggestion, as it may be a bit quick, the 9ths that change direction throughout being the chief technical challenge. The melody is, by default, the top notes of these octave-displaced figures. There are also thirds with broken octaves for accompaniment as well. Running time is approx.3 mins, 30 secs.,longer at a slightly slower pace. Pedaling is not specifically marked, but is given with general instructions rather than with traditional markings. MBB.

The half-step can be either inside or outside the 4th, and both are used, singly and mix-and-match fashion, as single notes and as chords. The fingerings are SUPER-simple. 4 2 1 or 4 3 1, usually together, but mixed as well. There are mirrored chords throughout as well. The composition uses black keys in bunches, or white keys all on their own. Keyboard topography is a large determining factor in ALL these Etudes, as the object was to create both musical moods and technical challenges, using as much hand-to-hand topographical mirroring as could be found, within a given interval or interval set. The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. The intervallic unity gives the piece, and ALL the pieces in this series, a continuity that binds the disparate pianistic applications together into unified and identifiable musics. It's not simply an inversion but the same relationship of black and white keys so that the 'feel' of the left hand duplicates the right hand original. One may inspect Vincent Persichetti's 'Seven Mirror Etudes' to see how this works; in his pieces the LH is a mirror of the RH. But in mine there are two mirrors, so to speak: each hand is a mirror of what the opposite hand has in the Chopin original. The result is somewhat odd, since major triads become minor and tonal relationships are altered.

All manner of topographically identical and mirrored, symmetrical structures are found here, sometimes with multiple layers of intervallic unity. All the gestures are shaped the same, until the penultimate segment, with the ONLY deviation from absolute topographical mirroring, which is then followed by a triplet figure in contrary motion, both within and between each line. Composition techniques including retrograde, transposition, augmentation, and diminution are used, making this an appropriate piece for theoretical analysis. (The inspiration for composing Mirrors came when I saw my reflection while parking my car in front of a building’s large window.)

The piano can be made to sound many ways, smooth, gleaming bright, jangling and rambunctious, even like a drum with keys. I hope to have covered most of these aspects of the pianistic touch in this set of etudes. The final item uses each interval in turn, then paired with the next-largest unit, moving through the entire group. Then, the right hand moves through all of them with a pedal point, followed by a similar exposition in the left. Arpeggios and chords ring out at the end, in a similar fashion to the summation that is the final Valse in Ravel Noble and Sentimental set.
