2015 Piano Contest 'The Hill' is an area in Boulder to the immediate west of the University of Colorado. There are residential areas, shops, and restaurants there. I remember one night in the late 1960's going to bed to the sounds and flashing lights of police helicopters hovering over that area. Tensions had been mounting between merchants on the Hill and hippies, who would often be in big groups and block the entrance to shops. There was a standoff between them that night. Here's another piece for a student. She likes improvising and composing with ostinato patterns and minimalism-type stuff, so I included repeating broken 3rds throughout the piece. She also asked for the hustle and bustle of downtown, so I tried to express that through honking horns and other sudden accented sounds caused by delivery trucks, subway, police whistles, etc. I wrote it in 5/4 because she wanted more of a challenge than in previous pieces and I mixed in a little Mixolydian and Aeolian into the melody. Enjoy!
