Since the young age of three, Christine has been fascinated by the piano. Receiving the highest honors given by the Guild National Piano Auditions, Christine's childhood classical training is evident in her melodic and thematic compositions, while rich harmonies reflect her background in accompanying various choral groups. From Chopin to Joplin, her influences were varied and many, and she also enjoyed creating her own arrangements of popular songs. Review of Seasons CD by Kathy Parsons (mainlypiano.com):

Seasons is a beautiful collection of original pieces by pianist/composer Sydney Stevens. Some of the pieces are solo piano and others feature duets with Mitch Iimori on English horn, oboe, and guitar (but not all at the same time!). The two musicians are obviously exceptionally comfortable and in tune with each other, and the results can be stunning. Very classical in scope and structure, the music is reflective of the natural surroundings of Ms Stevens’ home in the Colombia Gorge region of northern Oregon. The first eight of the fourteen tracks make up the Seasons Suite, a group of lyrical compositions inspired by the various times of year in a remote area of eastern Oregon. The other six pieces also have themes of nature and serenity.


The Seasons Suite begins with Colors Change, obviously about the transition of summer into fall, but also about the concept of change as we grow. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling in the ceaseless wind of that area. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing!


In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite. On Summit, Iimori trades his woodwinds for guitar in a gentle, sweeping duet with the piano.

Waning Star is a gorgeous piano solo that has a peaceful grace and quiet serenity - a favorite. Reach For the Stars is a piano solo that has an uplifting sense of moving forward and reaching out. Dawn closes the CD with a warm and soothing confection. The piano is accompanied by light percussion, bass, and washes of synth strings. Full of hope and optimism without being sugarcoated, this piece is spellbinding in its gentle way.

The Voyage of the Damned Suite comes from the 2007 Dr Who Christmas special of the same name, a thrilling adventure that sees The Doctor trying to save a Titanic spaceship replica before it crashes down to Earth. After the ship becomes damaged by asteroids and the deadly Host start attacking the passengers, The Doctor and a group of survivors fight to stay alive, hoping to save themselves, and the billions of people on the planet below.

This piece is a transcription of track 12 'Voyage of the Damned' from the Dr Who Series 4 soundtrack, a piece that contains several new musical ideas for the Christmas special as well as a heroic variation of the Doctor Forever theme. This arrangement aims to be an accurate and faithful portrayal of the original, combining parts and voices from across the orchestra. This piece has a little of everything, from fast moving sequences, to soft, expressive melodies. It really is a classic Dr Who story of thrills, drama, excitement and emotion.

This is a very interesting 4 voice fugue. I like a lot - but I can't play it on this tablature - even though I can play it on traditional notation. I wonder if it's because I learned to play it first on the traditional notation, or if the complexity of the piece makes the tablature less effective than it is on less complex pieces. Actually, i'm fascinated by the way it looks on the tablature. The weaving of the melody lines is very interesting. It really is a visual work of art!  6 Pages.

This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). This incredibly difficult-to-read piece is tamed by the key maps tablature. The traditional notation for this piece is at the extreme of its ability to notate piano music - and it fails miserably! It is playable only by the gifted few who have the tenacity to race through reading this incredibly fast 6 flat Eb minor notation. with its additional double flats and accidentals, some of which must be played on white keys. Surely the piece must be some kind of joke - Chopin's way of thumbing his nose at those bold enough to try to play it. It surely is NOT the great music that Chopin usually crafted.

The joke is that it is not really difficult to play. It is just incredibly difficult to READ! The music can be played, although without its breakneck speed, by students at the intermediate level if reading from a key map. This piece is an extreme example of how much easier playing from key maps can be.

Liszt's virtuoso transcription of the beloved Schubert Ave Maria is a wonderful work that has never been well-edited--until now! The notation used in all prior published versions had the melody placed on a third middle staff, making the piece annoyingly hard to read; bar after bar had groups of 11 or 12 32nd-notes beamed together, obscuring the metrical units; many bars involved 6 or 7 changes of clef; there were rhythms that didn't add up, and even misspellings of Italian terms! This edition addresses all of those issues, so that players can get down to the real work of learning this extraordinary piece. Liszt's setting of the song's second verse is something of a pianistic miracle: although both hands are engaged in constant arpeggiation and figuration, the melody somehow manages to appear in the middle of it all--almost as if played by a ghostly third hand!

Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned by
Richard Mason.
Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivic
and developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minor
and major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work.
The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’s
literature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work.
The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine.
The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The music
refers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).
The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to the
end.
The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (both
quiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano.
The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening is
marked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures.
The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux.
The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to an
intense climax before dying away.
The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad before
gradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.
The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assert
themselves before the music dies away.

Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smaller
assembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of the
preludes should not be changed. The movements should be listed in the program in the format shown at the top of this page.

This is the sixth installment in my series of piano impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme songs of early nineties video game systems like Nintendo.  This quick piece (1 min. 10 sec.) is a fun, aggressive composition that sounds harder to play than it really is.  The opening right-hand melody is easily played by fingering each four-note group with either 1,2,5 or 1,2,4.  I originally discovered this pattern from an Art Tatum transcription book.  He was the master of economical virtuosity.

ALT.CALLAHANS REEL

(which is actually a Slide, with a Reel interlude!)

 Fast  and lively foot-tapping neo-Celtic, at its best on electronic keyboard but also  a fun piano solo.  (Duration 8+ minutes)

 Reel Jiggery-pokery

The  song started as a jig but drank too much and reeled into 12/8 time. Properly  speaking, despite its strong 4-beat pulse, it's a Slide. Or perhaps a Double Jig. Except for the mid-section, which is really a Reel!  Needless to say, this is not for the  purists...but it's huge fun for the rest of us!

 Playing and Performing

We've marked it Advanced Intermediate. It's the indicated speed which makes demands!  But you can play it slower and enjoy!

On  electronic or MIDI keyboard, use a percussive/plucked foundation (e.g. piano,  harp, faux guitar) with a sustained string patch (string ensemble, synth strings, viola works well, fiddle works well, most violin patches are  terrible!). For piano, you'll have to use more of the sustain pedal but not too much or it'll go all muddy on you, just like a mis-step in an Irish bog!

(Original  live and YouTube performances were on a Medeli MC 710, from 2005.  This keyboard allowed splitting and dual voices. Piano was used as foundation both above and below the split point. A  loud viola patch was used as the second voice on the upper part of the  keyboard, as the dominant fiddle sound carrying the melody.  A synth string patch was used  as second voice on the lower half, giving  the drones.)

 Add Your Own Salt and Pepper to the Score!

The  song is scored for clarity, not as a detailed demand for every possible  nuance.  It's fast, so although simple  to look at when not playing,  you'll  need to be reading the music at speed. Unless, of course, you're blessed with a  brilliant memory! 

 So  the score isn't cluttered with ornaments and fiddly bits, or lots of expression marks. Especially, it's not cluttered by a lot of suspended notes.  BUT...you will need to suspend a lot of notes as you play. Think drones running all over the place and use your  keyboard sustaining string patches to bring those drones out!  Listen to the live recordings, they'll  help.  You,  as player, have lots of freedom!  It's up to you how many additional frills, or emphasis, or drone  suspensions you throw in.

 Why alt.callahans?

In the far distant past of 2005, there was  an Internet  newsgroup of that name, in honor and emulation of  Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, a fictional bar with strongly community-minded and empathic clientele, part of the fictional universe of American writer  Spider Robinson. [Wikipedia]  A  place for tall tales and true, comradeship, puns both good and bad.  We had fun there, and this song came out of  it. The Internet world, sadly, has changed since.
