PIano/ Late Intermediate, 2015 Piano Contest Program Note: A Cosmopolitan Nightmare of Wildland Manners 2014, Eric Glick Rieman Denizens of urban environments often feel a distinct distrust of wild lands, having been taught the paranoid fantasies of their elders about that which is perceived as wild(think - the big, bad wolf.) Wild lands represent a frightening metaphor for urban dwellers, that of both their lack of ultimate control, and the reality of each individual's smallness in relationship to the vastness of Wilderness. Plus, there is no place to buy Cheetos at the last minute when one is hungry in a Wilderness. Or have a texting conversation with your grandmother about the proximity of the aforementioned wolf. This in spite of the very real dangers of a standard walk in the park in a modern city. This piece begins with calm and simple melodic patterns, which are then stretched and bent into a slight and non-specific feeling of dis-ease, perhaps akin to the mild discomfort of your basic, entitled, urban Metrosexual when exposed to the vastness of a more natural environment. copyright 2014, Eric Glick Rieman/Water Goes Into The Air (sole proprietorship), ASCAP The MP3 clip performance is by Anastasia Reshetekhin.
