The Chinese Zodiac

A collection of 12 miniature piano solos celebrating the animals in the Chinese zodiac. This collection will challenge the intermediate and advanced pianist and explores different styles and techniques that characterize each animal.

The 12 animals are presented in the order of the Zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The songs can be performed as one suite, or as individual pieces in whatever order you please! 

The pieces explore different tempos, different keys, rapid fingering passages, expressive pieces, grace notes, articulation (staccato, accents, slurs, tenuto, legato), ornaments, challenging rhythm, doubled note passages, glissandos, dexterity on black keys, ragtime, boogie woogie, tremelos, swing rhythm, hand crossovers, and jazzy chords as well as more traditional harmonies.

Therefore, you will notice in this piece the transition from Asian to Western music. The piece starts with traditional Chinese music, then moves into more modern Asian music and then to a famous chord progression by Chopin. From there, the piece moves into a jazzy dance, and finally finishes on a modal folk tune. The piece contains challenges for several technical skills, making it idea for recitals and talent shows.
