2015 Piano Contest This arrangement is the most multi-layered of the pieces in the set. It has the melody tucked away in the middle voice treble, and that tune is supported throughout by a 4th underneath, that travels right along.The bass is a hemiola ostinato figure. To Top things off the root or the 5th of the key is added to each treble sonority. It makes for Minimalism with a maximum of interesting features. Intervals of a 9th in some places for the right hand. Short duration. Pedal throughout. MP3 MIDI audio. A solidly Intermediate-level piece. MBB.

Based on the traditional English folk song, Greensleeves, there is a haunting, soulful quality to the melody that inspired me to write this prelude. It starts simply enough with the similar lullaby-like quality found in Away in a Manger, but the minor key makes it less restful and more contemplative in nature. It gradually becomes more complex, adding a harmony above the melody before the first statement of the refrain occurs adding another voice to the chords and ultimately leading to four-part chords. I then transition to a figure in the right hand to represent the twinkling of the stars as the melody is woven into the pattern before reaching a climax with the final statement of the refrain in full-throated adoration. The prelude then draws back in intensity, closing with the twinkling of the stars once again in the right hand and resolving to a major chord.

♫ Malthie Davenport Babcock, a pastor in upstate New York, was an athletic man who loved to walk near Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. He often told his wife that he was “going out to see the Father’s world.†This phrase prompted the title for one of his original poems. His wife published his poems after his death in 1901 (age 42.) 

♫ In 1915 Franklin Shepherd, his friend, adapted Babcock’s poem and an English folk tune to create the hymn. Shepherd named the melody TERRA BEATA (Blessed Earth). 

♫ The original folk tune appears in the opening notes of the Shire Theme by Howard Shore in the Lord of the Rings Film Series.

♫ The last stanza used in this video is seldom found in hymnbooks. But there is a delightful idea here that since Jesus Christ was incarnated on the earth, the entire earth is holy ground.

This modern arrangement of What Child Is This explores the carol through a combination of refreshing jazzy sounds and dramatic piano writing. At the early advanced level, the piece begins with a mysterious, quiet introduction, which transitions into a syncopated rhythm that accompanies the first entrance of the melody, played by the right hand in expressive sixths. Throughout the arrangement, the melody undergoes a series of variations, with sixteenth-note decorations eventually spilling into a faster and pianistic section, which then leads toward a powerful climax with glorious octaves in the melody, rich bass notes, and triumphant inner voices. The music then fades away as quietly as it began-creating a musical journey that begins and ends with the hushed anticipation of the brilliant joys of the Christmas miracle to come.
