In 1959, Germaine Tailleferre wrote incidental music for a radio drama based on Philippe Jullian’s « Mémoire d’une bergère » or « Autobiography of an armchair » which traced the owners of this armchair from the court of Louis XV to England after the French Revolution, back to Paris and through the hands of various foreign owners (Arabian, American, German etc.). In illustrating this story Tailleferre used her great knowledge of musical styles to evoke these different settings, from the classical styles of French music of the XVIIIth century to classical, romantic, popular French styles as well as two evocations of American Blues/Ragtime music. These short pieces are interesting in and of themselves, in addition to illustrating Jullian’s story. The first piece may be repeated at the end, as it was in the original radio drama.

I happen to like both of them, so I included both of them in this piece.It’s a waltz, first on the more familiar MUELLER tune, then slowing down for CRADLE SONG. The final section combines the two. My Prelude on the hymn tune Terra Beata (This Is My Father's World) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations.  It is one of two settings for piano of  Terra Beata that I have written.  In this setting there are two statements of the melody.  The first places the melody in the soprano register with a repeated-note pattern serving as the accompaniment in the left hand.  The second places the melody in the bass register moving at half the previous speed and accompanied by a downward moving arpeggiation pattern played by the right hand.  The second half of the melody returns to the soprano, harmonized with 4-note chords, and accompanied by rapid downward moving scales played by the left hand.  In the final phrase, the pace slows, leading inconclusively to a chord of the 13th on G-flat at  mid-phrase, before resuming in the main key of E-flat and ending triumphantly with a repeated-note trumpet-like pattern.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

The piece begins with a gentle rocking figure in the left hand while the right hand represents the twinkling of the stars in the night sky. In the first verse, a simple statement of the melody begins over the figure established in the left hand. By the second verse, both hands have introduced another voice to the harmony. There are two popular musical settings of the lyrics, and in the third verse I tried to combine the rhythmic and melodic elements of both. The prelude closes with an air of wonder and reverence as the Child drifts back to sleep while the star shines overhead.
