This lovely little piece is for my cousin Angela with love and for the great memories of our childhood days when we had many innocent adventures together in her home village of Llwydcoed near Aberdare in South Wales. Despite having no money, life was free and a great adventure - playing in the parks and on the slag heaps (tips) created by the coal mines. There was little traffic to worry about and all the people were kind and friendly. If we did have a few pennies, we’d perhaps share a ‘Wagon Wheel’ which used to be at least three times the size that they are now and cost 3d (just over 1p). If we were really flushed and had 6d (2.5p), we’d buy a tube of ‘Smarties’ and then float the empty tube down the stream.This piece requires a 76 note (6 octaves) keyboard. I would rate this as MODERATELY DIFFICULT.

Programme Notes - Solo Piano Work In 2006, I was living on the hills which form the border between England and Wales; this is deemed to be an area of special scientific interest where the many wonders of Nature abound.  Rhaeadr means 'waterfall' in the Welsh language and my piece is a sound picture of the myriad forms, shapes, stillnesses and polar dynamic forces that waterfalls can evoke; from thundering torrents and sunlit pools to droplets and sprays that spirit into being, white and ghostly mists before our very eyes.  The music begins with a ‘trickling’ movement from the top of the waterfall and makes it’s way down, crashing into rocks, swerving around them and almost coming to a halt in a  shallow, sunlit pool which lies, temporarily, in a plateau. Then, finding a crevice to squeeze through, the water continues it’s unrelenting descent - finally reaching the bottom of the hill and coming to rest in calm liquidity. My thanks go to the pianist, Marija Vrskova at the FAMES studio in Macedonia where Rhaeadr was recorded under my remote direction and mixed and mastered by Laurent Köpitz and his commendable team. The three sisters dared to fall in love with three brothers from the neighbouring Nepean tribe, despite their union being forbidden. The witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe intervenes to protect the sisters by turning them into stone, preserving them for eternity. The music transports listeners to the heart of this beautiful place. Perhaps you will hear the longing and melancholy of the sisters, locked in their magnificent rock formation, standing tall as a testament to their love and the enduring consequences of a long-forgotten battle.

Legend has it that this old tune was discovered written on a scrap of paper found in a bottle which washed up on a beach in North Wales around 1900; its Welsh nickname Ton-y-Botel (Tune in a Bottle) comes from this story. The melody is also known as Ebenezer, named for Ebenezer Chapel where the actual composer attended services while writing this tune. Lyrics in sacred and secular contexts alike have been set to this famous melody. This dramatic piece begins with the arranger's original music rising in a theme accompanied by triplets, then moves into the powerful Welsh tune itself which in this creative arrangement is tossed from voice to voice, hand to hand. A strong sense of the love of Jesus rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me as well as a tender confidence in it underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love are the lingering emotions one feels as the same original music closes the piece with an impression of wonder. Some fingerings are included to facilitate reading but are merely suggestions. Pedaling has been written in, but again, is a suggestion. Because of its history, this music is adaptable to almost any circumstance, secular or sacred, where people gather for meaningful events: civic or military ceremonies, graduations, memorials, weddings, or church services of any denomination.

The wide leaping intervals crescendo to flowing arpeggios in the left hand convey the movement of snow, which subsides as the flakes settle calmly on the dark green Eucalyptus leaves. An expressive piece well suited for an exam or recital.
