What The World Needs Now Is Love is written in a relaxed waltz style.

What the World Needs Now Is Love is a 1965 popular song with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach. First recorded and made popular by Jackie DeShannon, it was released on April 15, 1965, on the Imperial label after a release on sister label Liberty records the previous month was canceled. It peaked at number seven on the US Hot 100 in July of that year.  In Canada, the song reached number one. 

The song's success caught the two songwriters completely by surprise, since they were very aware of the controversy and disagreements among Americans about the Vietnam War, which was the subtext for David's lyrics. Bacharach has continuously used the song as the intro and finale for most of his live concert appearances well into the 2000s.

What Child is This is a piano setting of the well-known Christmas carol of the same name, which dates from the 1800's. It is a familiar and beautiful carol which calls to mind the image of the Christ Child asleep on Mary's lap. This is a simple, straightforward setting which is descriptive of the utter humility and poverty of the Divine Child who was born in a humble stable in Bethlehem. Intermediate level; the piece is not difficult, but the final chords may be somewhat of a challenge for some.  This work is suitable for recitals, Christmas programs, concerts, Church liturgies, or for one's own edification and enjoyment -  it is a great piece to play expressively and musically.

I don't want it bogged down too much in the baggage of Hamlet, which is obviously impossible. The words in the title matter, and Shakespeare words is the best. The basic idea of the piece is death. In the first half, the protagonist feels death approaching. The middle march section is death's grasp, and the second half is the after-life dream. Sometimes we feel miserable with our lives and just simply desire that escape into a world that cannot harm us anymore. And sometimes it is okay to feel that, and to express that. Whatever may come after death, in the end, doesn't matter, because death is such a finality to life. I know for me, this piece lifts up my spirits and helps me enjoy life more. Our ability to express, particularly through music, the pains we may be feeling, is one of the greatest gifts we humans possess. I hope everyone is able to enjoy this music and my expression.
