In its broader sense, nada que ver is just that: there is nothing to see (this is what the police usually say when they want you not to stop). But as an idiom, nada que ver implies what you are saying is absolutely unrelated and therefore you are totally wrong.  Why is this waltz mercenary? Because it is very direct, traditional and does not intend to experiment with anything. In addition to the original version (for solo piano) the composer has made one for violin and piano (which can be played without major problems with flute, or with clarinet with slight adaptations). Mirroring and contrary motion abound here, as secondal structures, in chords, clusters, and single-note lies are all shaped and fingered the same for both hands. Smartly percussive in its sound. Only one short whole-tone-sounding segment. It is surprising how many types of symmetrical, pianistic gestures can be combined using this topographical i.e. black/white keys approach, and strictly limited intervallic material. Programme Notes - Solo Piano Work In 2006, I was living on the hills which form the border between England and Wales; this is deemed to be an area of special scientific interest where the many wonders of Nature abound.  Rhaeadr means 'waterfall' in the Welsh language and my piece is a sound picture of the myriad forms, shapes, stillnesses and polar dynamic forces that waterfalls can evoke; from thundering torrents and sunlit pools to droplets and sprays that spirit into being, white and ghostly mists before our very eyes.  The music begins with a ‘trickling’ movement from the top of the waterfall and makes it’s way down, crashing into rocks, swerving around them and almost coming to a halt in a  shallow, sunlit pool which lies, temporarily, in a plateau. Then, finding a crevice to squeeze through, the water continues it’s unrelenting descent - finally reaching the bottom of the hill and coming to rest in calm liquidity. My thanks go to the pianist, Marija Vrskova at the FAMES studio in Macedonia where Rhaeadr was recorded under my remote direction and mixed and mastered by Laurent Köpitz and his commendable team.
