This piece is a re-working of Renaissance composer William Byrd's The Bells, which appeared in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, an important collection of 16th-17th-century keyboard music from England. It was found in John Dowland's 16th-century lute book, and famed Renaissance composer William Byrd wrote and published his own arrangement called Wolsey's Wilde.  This solo is a faithful transcription of the original melody but has been arranged to make it enjoyable to play on the piano. Musical ornaments have been added to mimic the sound of a plucked string instrument. .
