The theme was inspired after an evening of amazing improvisational flute music in Eugene, OR when Judith started humming the tune that was not from what we had heard but from her imagination.  .

October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano.  I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire.  The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire.  These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared.  In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds.  In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later.  The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that.  The orchestral version was used in a film From the Ashes

The repeated descending theme in the first half depicts the downpours between sunny breaks which came to me in 1982. The theme in the second half came during a bike ride in late afternoon (1989). I put it together in 2005. In 2011 I added an oboe part performed by Paul McCandless that year (recording of him playing it on soprano sax in 2018 is on Nature's Dream).  I incorporated most of it in this solo piano arrangement which is a bit fuller than the simpler solo audio clip you will hear here (as well as a bit more challenging to play).  Later I will make the accompaniment version available (with the simpler piano part).

Always a sunny glow under a northern CA storm.  Many a predicted humdinger of a storm has a spell like the eye of a hurricane when the sun comes out, or tries to, and the rain is a very light mist.  Compared with the Seattle area with 3-4 layers of dark clouds, the storms do not seem too threatening with the relative light.  However looks are deceiving when one realizes these storms can knock down enough redwood limbs for multi-day power outages in many winters.  In the music we can hear the waves and bands of wind-driven rain as well as the sky glow.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q556978). Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Papillon for solo piano was first published in 1908 by Augener Ltd. Following George Augener’s retirement in 1910, the work along with the whole Augener catalogue (which contained no less than 24 other works by Coleridge-Taylor), was aquired by Schott and Co. Ltd. At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognised as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself as Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on thirteen occasions to date. Like many works from this period, at some point in the past Papillon became out of print. Schott Music is now very pleased to present this new modern performing edition with errors and inconsistencies from the original edition now corrected.
