It started me on the following thought process: What if you had the chance to wander through some woods and you happened to discover a hidden path. What would happen if you followed it? Maybe you would find an amazing, enchanted place that you would want to visit and re-visit again and again. Hidden Pathways is written in D-flat major–which sounds like a challenging key–it has five flats! But for some reason, D-flat sounds really enchanting to me. And it seems to fit the hands really well too! The piece could probably be classified as Neo-classical or New-Age Instrumental. Pedro Infante, for whom the song was written, recorded it in 1954.Norman Gimbel took the song, removed the somewhat melancholy Spanish lyrics about a man wondering if he shall ever love again, and wrote brand-new English lyrics about a man praising his dancing partner's ability to affect his heart with how she sways when they dance. This new song, titled Sway, has become a standard in the pop repertoire. I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.
