Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.977031 Composed by Paul SanGregory. Contemporary. Score. 20 pages. Distant Engraver Music #3534597. Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977031). This set of three pieces is well-suited for advanced students or professional performers who enjoy creating and shaping mood, atmosphere and color on the piano. They were composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy’s birth. For that reason, they are based on various composing techniques and aesthetic ideas that he developed. Even so, there was no attempt to make them actually sound like Debussy’s music. In fact, while composing them I often felt like I was looking at Debussy’s techniques through the distorting lenses of music that came after him, but that he had influenced.I - Drifting Through ChangeOne sort of change in this piece comes from the interaction of two repeated rhythmic patterns of different lengths. Episodes of contrasting character then drift in and out of the piece creating more changes. The effect is as if one is floating quietly through empty space, but occasionally drifting past various objects or situations.II - Building CloudsTo me, the opening of this movement sounds like an idea from Debussy’s Nuages that has been turned inside out. Unlike Debussy’s more delicate clouds, however, the clouds of this piece grow turbulent and dramatic. III - Moonless HeathFor this movement, I imagine walking through an open untamed field on a dark moonless night and not being sure what I might be passing by. In terms of color and technique, this piece shows a more obvious relationship to Debussy’s music that the first two. It begins with a simple melody similar to that of his Bruyére, after which a Debussy-inspired ostinato gently moves the music forward. Structurally, the whole piece is an inverted palindrome so that a melody from the beginning returns in retrograde-inversion at the end, becoming a brief quote of Debussy’s music. Performance duration ca. 11 minutes.

Score. 2 pages. Timothy Stapay #855346. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1262310). A piano solo arrangement of Yesterday Once More;  made famous by The Carpenters.  Yesterday Once More, written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, is a hit song by the Carpenters from their 1973 album Now & Then. Thematically the song concerns reminiscing about songs of a generation gone by. It segues into a long medley, consisting of eight covers of 1960s tunes incorporated into a faux oldies radio program. The work takes up the entire B-side of the album. The single version of the song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, kept from the number 1 spot by Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce.  It was the duo's fifth number two hit and makes them the act with the second-most number two hits on the chart behind Madonna. The song also peaked at number 1 on the easy listening chart, becoming their eighth number 1 on that chart in four years.   It is the Carpenters' biggest-selling record worldwide and their best-selling single in the UK, peaking at number 2 Richard Carpenter stated, on a Japanese documentary, that it was his favorite of all the songs that he had written. He has performed an instrumental version at concerts.Lyrics:[Verse 1]When I was young, I'd listen to the radioWaitin' for my favorite songsWhen they played, I'd sing alongIt made me smile[Pre-Chorus 1]Those were such happy timesAnd not so long agoHow I wondered where they'd goneBut they're back againJust like a long-lost friendAll the songs I loved so well[Chorus 1]Every sha-la-la-laEvery whoa, whoa-oh still shinesEvery shing-a-ling-a-lingThat they're starting to sing so fineWhen they get to the partWhere he's breaking her heartIt can really make me cryJust like before, it's yesterday once more(Shoobie-doo, lang, lang)(Shoobie-doo, lang, lang) [Verse 2]Lookin' back on how it was in years gone byAnd the good times that I hadMakes today seem rather sadSo much has changed[Pre-Chorus 2]It was songs of loveThat I would sing to themAnd I'd memorize each wordThose old melodiesStill sound so good to meAs they melt the years away[Chorus 2]Every sha-la-la-laEvery whoa, whoa-oh still shines(Only oldies, but goodies)Every shing-a-ling-a-lingThat they're starting to sing so fineAll my best memoriesCome back clearly to meSome can even make me cryJust like before, it's yesterday once more(Shoobie-doo, lang, lang) [Outro]Every sha-la-la-laEvery whoa, whoa-oh still shinesEvery shing-a-ling-a-lingThat they're starting to sing so fineEvery sha-la-la-laEvery whoa, whoa-oh still shinesEvery shing-a-ling-a-lingThat they're starting to sing so fine...

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.828263 Composed by Paul Thurmond. New Age,Pop,Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 3 pages. Paul Thurmond #4969097. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828263). Use: Prelude, Offertory, CommunionI have a nice view from my studio window on the second floor of my house. It overlooks our big backyard, some trees and brush, a couple of fields, and some small mountains in the distance. My studio is set up so that as I play I can look outside. This year in Tennessee we’ve had more snow than normal. There have been many school closings. Even Tennessee Tech shut down at times, which hardly ever happens. So I’ve had some opportunities to sit in my studio in the middle of the day, look out my window at the beautiful falling snow, and write music.I began today’s piece a few weeks ago, during one of the largest snowfalls I’ve seen since I moved here from Wisconsin. I composed a few measures that I liked, couldn’t think of where to go next, and put it aside for a time. For the next few days I kept coming back to it, always liking what I had already written, but not able to add anything new. Then we had another snowfall. This time I was able to finish the basic structure of the piece, but I got stuck when I started to polish it up.A couple of days ago it snowed yet again, and I completed the work and recorded it.Today is Saturday, and it’s not snowing as I write this. However, they’re predicting more snow on Monday, which is usually the day I edit my blog posts. [Last minute update: No snow on Monday, although we did get 2 inches of rain.]Apparently, this piece owes its existence to frozen precipitation. I considered naming it Paean to the Snow Muses, but I think I’ll stick with my original title, February.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1302976 Composed by 'Fats' Waller and Harry Brooks. Arranged by Richard Simm. 20th Century,Jazz,Ragtime,Standards. Score. 4 pages. Richard Simm #892581. Published by Richard Simm (A0.1302976). A departure from my usual 2-piano arrangements of classical repertoire, I felt that this irresistible song from 1929 just had to be arranged for ambitious solo pianists who have moments when they want to have some fun. After all, good music is good music, whatever mood you're in!I started my career playing simple versions of this kind of music by ear, and despite becoming dedicated to the classical musical world, I've never lost my admiration for the musicality and technical assuredness of many ragtime, honky-tonk and jazz pianists of 100 years ago. The best of their music is truly inspiring. The tempo I have chosen is livelier than 'Fats' Waller's own performance of the song, where he sings to his own piano accompaniment. It's more like the tempo of Louis Armstrong's inimitable version on trumpet.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1000329 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Eber, and Steve Boudreau. Arranged by Steve Boudreau. 20th Century,Jazz,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Steve Boudreau #6681051. Published by Steve Boudreau (A0.1000329). The Bach Chorales are ultimate examples of melodies creating harmonies, the parts coming together to form a whole. They are also great examples of a musician taking a melody and making a new arrangement of it, like jazz musicians do today. This piece is a combination of two chorale melodies that Bach arranged, originally based on hymns by 16th-century composer Paul Eber. For context, Bach set the melody around 200 years after it was written, and I re-worked the melodies with my own harmonies nearly 300 years after that. The first job I had when I moved back to Ottawa from Boston was as a church pianist. At one point there was a two-month stretch where I was in charge of programming the instrumental music we played, and I challenged myself to come up with new arrangements every week- the way Bach would have in his time, just on a much smaller scale. This was a terrific creative outpouring of music for me, and it renewed my enormous respect for the church music community and the work involved. For this piece I took two seemingly unrelated chorales (they are actually from the same Cantata, BWV 127) and attached them, using their distant keys of A Major and F Major to set up an interesting modulation halfway through. I had to actively try out some more modern harmonic progressions to take the overall sound of the piece further away from Bach's version. One of my favourite moments is when you finish the C major resolution and then repeat back into F# Minor at the top for improvising. In the solo piano version this surprising cut doesn't occur unless you take a second pass through the piece, so I encourage you to try repeating the piece even if you don't feel comfortable embellishing or changing anything the second time around.
