Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Upstream Music #482215. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520).

There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

By Anne Murray. By Bob House and Wayland Holyfield. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Country,Film/TV,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 4 pages. Timothy Stapay #836965. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1241593).

A traditionl Country-Style arrangement of Could I Have This Dance; from the movie Urban Cowboy.

Could I Have This Dance is a song recorded by the Canadian country music artist Anne Murray. It was used in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy and appeared on both the Urban Cowboy soundtrack album for that film, as well as on the Anne Murray's Greatest Hits compilation album, issued in late 1980. Later on, it also appeared on Murray's 2007 album Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends, performed as a duet with Amy Grant.

As a single, it was released in August 1980 and became Murray's fifth number one country hit as a solo artist. It went to number one for one week and spent a total of ten weeks on the country chart.  Could I Have This Dance was also Murray's tenth Top 40 on the U.S. pop singles chart, peaking at number 33.  The song was written by Wayland Holyfield and Bob House.

Lyrics:

I'll always remember the song they were playin'
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together, I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

By George Gershwin. By John W. Collette. Arranged by Timothy Stapay/George Gershwin. Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 5 pages. Timothy Stapay #1031803. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1452471).

Here is George Gershwin's version of I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, which I arranged based on a Gershwin piano roll from the early 20th century.  It was held in a private collection for decades.   Here for the first time is my sheet music arrangement for this classic from long ago.  Before he was famous, George was what was known as a song plugger.  He would play newly composed songs to help generate record sales.  In the early 20th century, many homes had player pianos.  George's performance was preserved on such a roll and is only now available to the general public.

Composed in 1918 by John W. Collette.  The phrase “blowing bubbles” symbolizes the act of chasing dreams, hopes, and aspirations. Just like soap bubbles that float away and disappear, dreams can be elusive, fleeting, and transient.  Famously covered by Doris Day.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
I'm dreaming dreams
I'm scheming schemes
I'm building castles high
They're born anew
Their days are few
Just like a sweet butterfly
And as the daylight is dawning
They come again in the morning

[Chorus]
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high
Nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Eber, and Steve Boudreau. Arranged by Steve Boudreau. 20th Century,Jazz,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Steve Boudreau #6681051. Published by Steve Boudreau (A0.1000329).

The Bach Chorales are ultimate examples of melodies creating harmonies, the parts coming together to form a whole. They are also great examples of a musician taking a melody and making a new arrangement of it, like jazz musicians do today. This piece is a combination of two chorale melodies that Bach arranged, originally based on hymns by 16th-century composer Paul Eber. For context, Bach set the melody around 200 years after it was written, and I re-worked the melodies with my own harmonies nearly 300 years after that.

The first job I had when I moved back to Ottawa from Boston was as a church pianist. At one point there was a two-month stretch where I was in charge of programming the instrumental music we played, and I challenged myself to come up with new arrangements every week- the way Bach would have in his time, just on a much smaller scale. This was a terrific creative outpouring of music for me, and it renewed my enormous respect for the church music community and the work involved.

For this piece I took two seemingly unrelated chorales (they are actually from the same Cantata, BWV 127) and attached them, using their distant keys of A Major and F Major to set up an interesting modulation halfway through. I had to actively try out some more modern harmonic progressions to take the overall sound of the piece further away from Bach's version. One of my favourite moments is when you finish the C major resolution and then repeat back into F# Minor at the top for improvising. In the solo piano version this surprising cut doesn't occur unless you take a second pass through the piece, so I encourage you to try repeating the piece even if you don't feel comfortable embellishing or changing anything the second time around.

The album follows Ólafsson’s hugely successful DG recording of works by the composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (2018), which won BBC Music magazine’s Album of the Year, Opus Klassik’s Solo Recital award, numerous other recording of the year accolades and led to him being named Gramophone magazine’s Artist of the Year. Now Ólafsson brings his unique musical vision, and an affecting, meticulous recorded sound to Bach’s masterpiece. It marks the first time Ólafsson records a complete work and he begins with one of the most demanding in the piano repertoire.

He brings Bach’s masterpiece to major concert halls including London’s Southbank Centre, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Harpa Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, LA’s Walt Disney Hall, Sala São Paulo, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Tonhalle Zurich, KKL Luzern, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Mupa Budapest and Teatro Colón, to name a few.

“The Goldberg Variations contain some of the most virtuosic keyboard music ever written, some of the most astonishingly brilliant uses of counterpoint in the repertoire and countless instances of exalted poetry, abstract contemplation and deep pathos – all within immaculately shaped structures of formal perfection. In 30 variations, built on the humble harmonic framework of a simple, graceful aria, Bach turns limited material into boundless variety like no one before or since. He is the greatest keyboard virtuoso of his time.†comments Víkingur Ólafsson.

Composed by Irving Berlin. Arranged by Timothy Stapay/Liberace. Broadway,Easter,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Standards,Traditional. Score. 10 pages. Timothy Stapay #809498. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1211946).

Easter Parade by Irving Berlin, is arranged as played by legendary piano showman, Liberace.  Here for the first time is the sheet music for this famous song, arranged as performed by Liberace.  Now you can learn to play this classic Easter Season song, just like this world-famous pianist.

Easter Parade is a popular song, written by Irving Berlin and published in 1933. Berlin originally wrote the melody in 1917, under the title Smile and Show Your Dimple, as a cheer up song for a girl whose man has gone off to fight in World War I.  Berlin resurrected the tune, with modifications, and gave it the now-familiar Easter lyrics for the 1933 Broadway musical revue As Thousands Cheer, in which musical numbers were strung together on the thematic thread of newspaper headlines.

In 1942, it was featured in the musical film Holiday Inn, in which it was performed by Bing Crosby. In 1948, it was performed by Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in the musical film Easter Parade, which was constructed around the song.

Władziu Valentino Liberace(May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987) was an American pianist, singer, and actor.  A child prodigy born in Wisconsin to parents of Italian and Polish origin, he enjoyed a career spanning four decades of concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. At the height of his fame from the 1950s to 1970s, he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world!

Lyrics below:

[Verse 1]
In your Easter bonnet
With all the frills upon it
You'll be the grandest lady
In the Easter parade

I'll be all in clover
And when they look you over
I'll be the proudest fellow
In the Easter parade
[Chorus]
On the avenue, Fifth Avenue
The photographers will snap us
And you'll find that you're
In the rotogravure

Oh, I could write a sonnet
About your Easter bonnet
And of the girl I'm taking
To the Easter parade

[Chorus]
On the avenue, Fifth Avеnue
The photographers will snap us
And you'll find that you'rе
In the rotogravure

Oh, I could write a sonnet
About your Easter bonnet
And of the girl I'm taking
To the Easter parade

Composed by Cesar Antonovich Cui. Arranged by Jeffrey Biegel. Classical. Score. 43 pages. Artaria Editions #1064233. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487259).

The Preludes by Cesar Cui are a fascinating set of pieces, with a distinctive character for each tonality. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit.

Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557).

A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.

Composed by Ben Clapton. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 18 pages. Ben Clapton #5828377. Published by Ben Clapton (A0.842484).

A minimalist piano piece inspired by a roadtrip across the Nullabor, the stretch of road between Adelaide and Perth in Australia.

After an interrupted start, it expands into a molto perpetuo that depicts the continuous movement as you drive across this large continent. It expands, and changes in style, yet there is familiarity through the sections. It then cuts - almost abruptly - into a slower, reflective space. Driving across for the first time, there is a sense of awe that comes at certain parts, as you reflect on what you are doing. But that reflection can't last forever, and it transitions back into the molto perpetuo once again. The piece closes with more reflection, remembering the incredible journey.

This piece would be excellent for a recital or performance. Length: 13-14 minutes.

If you're performing this piece, please let me know through my socials - Ben Clapton Music on all platforms - or through my website - http//benclapton.id.au - I'd love to send through some encouragement.

One of the trials and tribulations of being a music teacher in the UK is the amount of time wasted in meetings that should really be held in the Maths department. On one such occasion, my Head of Department were so utterly bored and disinterested in useless information being imparted to us that we began a kind of musical chess game. Each of us in turn chose a length and a pitch and added wrote them down on a scrap of MSS paper that I found in a pocket. We had to make the motifs as musical as possible, while making it increasingly difficult for the other to finish off the current phrase. By the end of the meeting, we had completed the first phrase up to about measure 16. I took the scrap of paper home and developed it into this piece, which is actually rather good. The title is just We're Bored backwards! Enjoy!

Composed by Moshe S. Knoll. 21st Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. Score. 51 pages. ArtsAhimsa #846842. Published by ArtsAhimsa (A0.1253097).

This is a large scale Tryptich, inspired by Debussy's Suite pour le Piano.
It was begun in 2021 and it kept being re-written till 2023.
I dedicate this Tryptich to the loving memory of the great American Pianist
and pedagoge Mr. Beveridge Webster, who was my last teacher at Juilliard.
The first piece is a Prelude, playful but not too carefree, the dance-like
atmosphere gets interrupted several times by a serious, contemplative
Chorale-like passage.
The second piece, Nocturno-Fantasia is a desolated landscape of pain and despair,
a reflection of the harsh times the human family has had to endure these last three years.
The last movement, is a large-Scale Toccata in the Phrygian Mode, using
irregular time signatures.
This Toccata must be played in strict tempo, to highlight those irregular rhythms.
Dies Irae is referenced in both the second and third movements, discreetly, just beneath the surface.
This Cycle of three can be performed as a unit, or as three separate pieces.
It is designed to give virtuosi a new warhorse for competitions, certainly
the Toccata.
I do believe this Toccata has great technical value for pianists as an Etude in articulation
and rhythm.
Beyond this, I hope that this music will express a wide range of human sufferings and aspirations,
and that it will deliver an emotional catharsis for all potential listeners.
With this composition I am joining the large group of composers who have created
New Music these last few years, music testifying to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

As composed and recorded by Kathleen Ryan on her CD Under the Greenwood Tree.

Kathleen's composer notes:
A story song that began with a simple Western waltz that came to me while we were driving into town one day. (I have a way of notating a melody very quickly so that I don’t lose music in such situations.) Until I sat down to do the first recording of this music, Water in a Dry Land was still just the little waltz. But while the music expressed all the longing for water that we here in the dry land feel, it didn’t actually have any water in it, and as soon as I started recording I wanted some watery music to be there. So I made up the middle section, which seems to me to be quite watery, and practiced it and thought I was done. Then the next time we recorded it, on listening to the playback, all of a sudden I wanted to hear the dry land! That was the genesis of the opening chords, which repeat after the middle (water) section. I was still refining (that is, re-writing) this music up to the very day I recorded it!

Advanced: a challenging piece that offers many contrasts of mood and style. Architectural in its structure, with sections depicting the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico, the earth’s longing for water, and the welcome blessing of gentle rains.
