Written in the key of F Major, this piece contains rich jazz chords, echos in the treble, a bridge that changes to 6/8, and a key change to Bb that uses octaves in the R.H. melody. Performance time varies from 2-3+ minutes depending on which ending is implemented (see performance notes on the 1st page of music).There are 3 ways provided in the music to end this arrangement. This solo implements all 3 stanzas making this a longer than normal instrumental piece. The easiest way to end this arrangement would be to 1) perform the 1st 2 pages as written (Intermediate, 2 verses). 2) this option proceeds to V3 without a key change. 3) this option proceeds to V3 with an exciting key change, recommended over Opt.2.Also note, Eb is my preferred key of this arrangement however, included in this download is the same arrangement transposed up to D and E.

Da mir aber kleine Aufträge grundsätzlich zu groß geraten, beschloss ich, aus der Not eine Tugend zu machen und einfach ein richtiges großes Stück en miniature zu schreiben. Der Witz des Zyklus besteht darin, dass er trotz seiner nur 5minütigen Spieldauer (ohne Widerholungen sind es sogar nur dreieinhalb Minuten) ein ausgewachsener Variationszyklus mit den wichtigsten Merkmalen dieser Form ist. Das tänzerische Element des a-Moll-Themas verschwindet immer mehr bis zu einem dramatischen Trauermarsch in der vierten Variation, um dann in der letzten Variation wieder zu dem Schubert’schen Original zurück zu finden, allerdings in A-Dur und in langsamerem Tempo, so dass sich in seiner bitteren Süße sogar noch ein Überbieten des typischen Schubert-Tons ereignet. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique. Every single note is written to express, and sometimes expand upon, the word of the text at that point in time. There is no Time Signature as it is an irregular meter which changes every few bars using 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4 but always maintaining a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo with many markings of articulation. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.10 pages4:45 minutes
