It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

Die Assoziation Urne - Grabgefäß ist beabsichtigt, denn die Gattung des romantischen Nachtstücks für Klavier wird in diesen Stücken - zumindest im übertragenen Sinne - zu Grabe getragen. Das erste Stück Nocturne greift auf den dreiteiligen Typ des Chopin’schen Nocturnes zurück. Einer von zart getropften Tönen umspielten Melodie folgt ein bewegt - aufgewühlter Mittelteil, dem sich die Reprise des ersten Teils anschließt, diesmal allerdings wird die Melodie von leise rauschenden Skalen umspielt, ehe eine beinahe nüchterne Coda die musikalische Quintessenz brennglasartig zusammenfasst und bündelt. Dieses Stück entstand 1998 und war Pflichtstück beim Internationalen Schubert-Wettbewerb 2000 in Dortmund. Die drei folgenden Stücke bilden gewissermaßen eine Einheit. Nummer zwei Ciacona notturna ist ein höchst virtuoses Werk für die linke Hand allein, in dem sich große Klavierkomponisten, die Werke für die linke Hand allein geschrieben haben – Alkan, Brahms, Godowsky, Ravel, Prokofieff – gleichsam ein nächtliches Stelldichein geben. Das dritte Stück Unendliche Melodie – Melodie der Unendlichkeit (für die rechte Hand allein – meines Wissens außer einer Etüde von Alkan das einzige existierende Werk für die rechte Hand allein) spielt mit der Idee eines Zeitkontinuums, das schon vor Beginn des Stückes unhörbar im Raum war und sich auch nach dem Ende des Stückes in alle Ewigkeit weiter fortsetzen könnte. Ein einzelner Ton f in der Mitte der Klaviatur wird 55 Takte lang angeschlagen und über ihm entfaltet sich eine weit gespannte Melodie, die die rechte Hand alleine ausspinnt. Exakt beim Höhepunkt der Melodie (es ist der Goldene Schnitt), wechselt das f zum e, das weitere 33 Takte lang angeschlagen wird, während die Melodie darüber wieder zurück zur Mitte findet. Diese 88 Takte symbolisieren die Unendlichkeit: 8 als barockes Zahlensymbol für die Vollkommenheit der Ewigkeit und die liegende 8 als mathematisches Symbol für die Unendlichkeit. Schließlich ist in dem Titel des Stückes noch eine Anspielung auf Richard Wagners Begriff der Unendlichen Melodie enthalten. Nach einem Stück für die linke und einem für die rechte Hand allein, kann sich als viertes nur ein Unisonostück anschließen, in dem beide Hände stets die gleichen Töne, aber in unterschiedlichen Oktavabständen und verschiedenen rhythmischen Akzenten spielen. La scala dell’inferno (Die Höllenleiter) stürzt von höchster Höhe in rasenden Skalen in die tiefsten Regionen des Klaviers hinab, unterbrochen von zwei kurzen Zitaten des Dies Irae in der Mitte. Der Schlusssatz schließlich Marche funèbre knüpft in seiner düsteren Unentrinnbarkeit an die großen Trauermarschvorbilder Beethovens (op. 26) und Chopins (op.35) an. Die sich in schwerem Fünfertakt entlang rollenden düsteren Tonkaskaden werden in der Mitte von einem gläsern-durchsichtigen Mittelteil unterbrochen, der in seiner gleißenden, fast schneidenden Helligkeit Assoziationen an Nahtoderlebnisse nahe legen mag. Die Nacht-Urnen op. 32 wurden 2001 im Museum Baden in Solingen von dem Pianisten Rainer Klaas uraufgeführt, dem der Zyklus auch gewidmet ist. - Stefan Heucke.

It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...

It was a sunny Saturday morning in May when I recorded in my home a few of my favorite holiday songs, like Silent Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and other Christmas carols.After doing this, I asked myself, why don't I compose a new instrumental piano piece and submit it along with the other familiar demo examples. I imagined children playing in the snow, sledding down hills, their excitement on Christmas morning, and the wonderful spirit of the holiday season. After a little while I composed this piece. I then thought to myself; “I’ll call it CHRISTMAS FROLIC. Even though Nordstrom never used this piece on their Holiday CD, I performed it for audiences. I remember once telling a friend, “Here’s a new piece I composed called CHRISTMAS FROLIC, however, it can only be played during the Christmas season. My friend replied; “Robert, why don’t you just call it FROLIC, then you can play it all year long.The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings and appropriate musical terms for playing. This advanced intermediate piano solo can be played year around. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events and makes and excellent encore for professionals.It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for more advanced piano students. FROLIC was recorded as a piano selection in 1998 on Robert’s CD entitled PIANO & MEMORIES. When he explained it to the Lord, the Lord told him to go stand out upon the mountain before Him. And behold the Lord passed by and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; But the Lord was not in the wind: And after the wind an earthquake; But the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; But the Lord was not in the fire: And after the fire a still small voice. God wasn't in the mighty wind. God wasn't in the terrible earthquake. God wasn't in the fire. God was the still small voice. That is where I can find Him still. That is what makes me responsible for my actions. I have the still small voice telling me what is right and what is wrong. It is called, the light of Christ. It is revelation from God. I can try to drown it out and pretend I don't hear it. However, pretending doesn't alter the fact that God's still small voice is always there for those who will listen.
