I remember thinking to myself that this wasn't fair. It wasn't right. This was the first time that someone close to me was ushered out of this world. I started looking at my own life. Was I ready to leave this world behind? My auntie didn't get to decide. One moment she was here. The next she was gone, leaving her children behind. As I looked at myself I noticed there were a lot of flaws in my character. I liked some things about myself, however, there were a lot of other character traits where I felt that I was lacking in integrity and honesty. The question, What am I doing here? made me want to correct those flaws so that I could feel good about meeting God when I leave this world. I have found that change is possible.

Before I arrived at mission age I had to make a lot of decisions about whether or not I wanted to go on a mission. There were so many voices calling out to me. The voices promised me scholarships and fame. The voices questioned my logic. The voices tried to make me doubt my motives and character. The voices ridiculed me and my desires to do good. The voices told me that they loved me, but wouldn't wait for me if I went on a mission. All of those voices were demeaning of me if I went on a mission. They also promised me joy, but only if I decided not to go on a mission. I ultimately decided to go on a mission. By going on a mission I was put in a situation where I could testify of God's gospel truths. Those people hearing the truths had the opportunity to pray to God to find out for themselves if what they had been taught was true. Those people that talked to God in prayer joined the church. Why? Because God answered their prayers. Some of those new members went on missions to other lands converting through the spirit of the Holy Ghost others, who in turn went on missions to other lands. The cycle continues. Just one person doing what he knows is right can set off a chain reaction for the good that will go on and on.

They are intended as simple, meditative pieces, perhaps good for student pianists to attempt.In spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, I suffered a massive manic episode followed by a debilitating depression that lasted over a year. During this time I found my relationship with music fraught—I could not compose, and could barely even listen to music for enjoyment, relaxation, or whatever other reasons people listen to music. It was terrifying, thinking my life’s work was over.The shift to being unable to compose or listen, however, was a gradual, like the shift from mania to depression. I found my listening habits following what seemed like a massive ritardando, as they moved away from the upbeat music I was used to toward more and more ambient, very slow music. Hiroshi Yoshimura’s album Music For Nine Postcards was on repeat for a long while before the total break. Its calm repetitions must have influenced what I was doing, because I sometimes found myself at the piano playing the same note or chord over and over again, just listening to the details in the resonance. Out of this came the first of these four pieces, On Nothing.Eight months later I found myself doing it again, the result of which is Four One. Another eight months went by before About Sixths, and then, as my recovery became more and more apparent, only two months passed until On Sol. I am grateful to say I am now composing every day again, though my music has, without conscious intention, taken on a far more introspective feel than ever before.I have not given the pieces numbers, because I don’t mind if they are played in a different order, alone, or—as the title suggests—as interludes between other pieces. I do like the printed order though.

I can try to drown it out and pretend I don't hear it. However, pretending doesn't alter the fact that God's still small voice is always there for those who will listen.

Kansas’s acoustic hit “Dust In The Wind” is a reflective song about the inevitability of mortality and the insignificant role every person plays in the bigger picture. It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind”.The music came from a picking exercise he was doing that his wife suggested he make a song out of. It was the last addition to the album. “Dust In The Wind” was a top 10 hit in the US and Canada in the spring of 1977 and remains the biggest hit of their career. Zappa Quote: This is a 12-tone crab canon written when I was 18. There's actually another version for two guitars, so it's a double crab canon. I don't know where it is though. I'd been doing 12-tone music for quite some time before I did this, but it was the first time I'd tried to write something for the guitar. I couldn't play it, and I never got to hear it until I got the Synclavier. And because it's printed on the Synclavier, that also means I got to push the button and listen to it..

It was a sunny Saturday morning in May when I recorded in my home a few of my favorite holiday songs, like Silent Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and other Christmas carols.After doing this, I asked myself, why don't I compose a new instrumental piano piece and submit it along with the other familiar demo examples. I imagined children playing in the snow, sledding down hills, their excitement on Christmas morning, and the wonderful spirit of the holiday season. After a little while I composed this piece. I then thought to myself; “I’ll call it CHRISTMAS FROLIC. Even though Nordstrom never used this piece on their Holiday CD, I performed it for audiences. I remember once telling a friend, “Here’s a new piece I composed called CHRISTMAS FROLIC, however, it can only be played during the Christmas season. My friend replied; “Robert, why don’t you just call it FROLIC, then you can play it all year long.The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings and appropriate musical terms for playing. This advanced intermediate piano solo can be played year around. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events and makes and excellent encore for professionals.It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for more advanced piano students. FROLIC was recorded as a piano selection in 1998 on Robert’s CD entitled PIANO & MEMORIES. I thought that my friends were smarter than they were. I felt invincible. I made many foolish mistakes during those years. About that time, my family was preparing to move from Oregon to Utah. I remember my mother talking with me and saying that I could start over again. We would be in a new place with new people. No one would know me. I could be the person I truly wanted to be. I thought about this a lot, and when we finally made the move I had decided what kind of person I really wanted to be. In fact, I felt bad for being the wrong kind of person and hurting other people physically and spiritually. I eventually felt so bad about my mistakes that I decided that I would write or call the people I had hurt and apologize to them. Over the period of a year I was able to find, call and apologize to each of them. To my great surprise none of them were still angry with me. I was forgiven. That was a great feeling. This day will be forever what you choose. Once you leave this life you won't be able to return and right any wrongs that you have committed. So when you make a mistake, choose to make it right today so that this day, this day of good choosing will be what will last forever. Never let yourself do something that you know inside is wrong. If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. Be the son or daughter of God. Do what He would do.

I eventually got sick of this and wrote this arrangement. I also added the key change because of one recording I heard of Billy Joel playing this piece, except he played it really slow, and then sped up the recording before posting it, but in doing so, the whole song went up a half step. I liked how it sounded in that key, so I implemented it halfway through this arrangement. It does make the 2nd half quite a bit harder, but as they say, you can't have everything in life.Other than that, I hope you enjoy this song. It's a lot of fun.

It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

When I wrote this piece - I actually decided to base it off a piece that I learnt when I doing piano exams when I was a lot younger. I used the structure of the piece to inspire my writing, copying things like the phrase lengths and the general style and feel of the piece. I find that’s a really good way to go about writing a piece when I’m not feeling too inspired. Taking a piece you enjoy listening to and copying some element that stands out to you like the structure, harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, tone colour, etc. I mean the options are endless.Once you have a part of the piece that you want to copy you can really go from there and just make the piece your own. As long as you don’t copy too many aspects of the piece then you will come up with something original because no one is you. I highly recommend trying this writing technique if you write music as it really helps you to just get started on your music.

A minimalist piano piece inspired by a roadtrip across the Nullabor, the stretch of road between Adelaide and Perth in Australia.After an interrupted start, it expands into a molto perpetuo that depicts the continuous movement as you drive across this large continent. It expands, and changes in style, yet there is familiarity through the sections. It then cuts - almost abruptly - into a slower, reflective space. Driving across for the first time, there is a sense of awe that comes at certain parts, as you reflect on what you are doing. But that reflection can't last forever, and it transitions back into the molto perpetuo once again. The piece closes with more reflection, remembering the incredible journey. This piece would be excellent for a recital or performance.
