I composed Temporary Dwelling at a time when I was moving from Minnesota to Illinois.  At the same time, my parents were moving from Saskatchewan (CA) to Arkansas.  Everything was in flux.  This piece is programmatic and tries to express the energy of life in motion with a brief stopover between dwellings.  An ostinato in the left hand helps with continuity, while the melodic line seems to defy the implied tonality.  The piece doesn't really end, with the opening ostinato fading out, like a 'radio fade.

Musical Map:
Right from the start, they will know this isn't a traditional Christmas instrumental.
A fully notated jazz solo will have them wondering whether you are improvising.
Then it's back to the melody as it modulates from Bb major to G Major.
But it's short lived with the energy lifting once more to C major… before winding down to what seems will be a predictable ending.
But wait, a deceptive ending cadence holds back that final tonic chord just a bit longer.

Don't be surprised to find your listeners unconsciously moving to the deliciously irresistible down home groove.
