Will we meet again by the river of life?” Lowry assured her from Revelation 22:1 they they would. Then, later that afternoon he wrote both the words and the music of Shall We Gather at the River.The arrangement may serve as well as an early goal for a progressing piano student as for an intermediate to advanced player this coming Sunday.The intro announces the tune and calls the first line of the chorus to mind. After setting the meditative mood the first stanza is presented in right hand melody with left hand accompaniment that only occasionallyis rhythmically active beyond beat three. Then, the easily playable key change takes the vision to the bank of the “shining river” by way of a brief, flowing left hand figuration. I have composed numerous waltzes, as I have an affinity for them, especially if they have unique interest. The opening of this waltz is based on a snippet of material I heard in a beginning ballet class many years ago. The idea repeated many times, to the point of annoyance. I thought, now that A# in bar 2, bulling its way into E minor, is trouble waiting to happen. And indeed, trouble comes. This section appears several times, in different minor keys, alternating with contrasting sections, like a rondo. Every time the A# (or its transposed equivalent) is played, various harmonic disasters occur, growing more intense as the piece progresses. As for the title, I like the word 'rhinoceros.' I played the piece for some of them, and they liked it well enough.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1172139). The Lily and The Rose is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. This arrangement is mostly inspired by the original 12 bar tune.  I started with the original melody, then changed several of the notes; then doubled the note values before making further rhythmic changes.  Then I set it to a chromatically descending bass line.  Once I had completed that romantically inspired section, I changed the Time Signature and created a New Age section using a few of the melodic notes.  It becomes a unique and expressive piano solo.  2 page score; 2:00 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.
