The Spring Chicken Swing is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Swing in the narrow sense defines the rhythmic feel and articulation of jazz music, but the word has come to define the Big Band Jazz era of the ‘30s and’40s and the new-style dances that came with it.

The Spring Chicken Swing is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. Go Down Moses is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais (or English Horn).

Go Down Moses was first published in 1853 after Afro-American Contraband regiments sang it during the American Civil War. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong. William Faulkner named a novel after the song and there is a memorable performance in the 1941 film, Sullivan’s Travels.

This gospel version of Amazing Grace is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Violin. Written in 1773 by John Newton and set to the traditional melody New Britain, Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world.

John Newton, led a dissolute life as sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais (or English Horn).

Go Tell It on The Mountain is most often considered a Christmas Carol with the original lyrics,

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

Nothing is known of its origins, but it first appeared in print in an 1865 collection of Spirituals. More recently, the lyrics have been adapted to support the struggle for human rights, most famously by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice in swing style after a brief introduction; after a short breakdown the key changes and the melody is repeated at a slower tempo.
