Paul-Agricole Génin was born on 14th February 1832, in Avignon; died 22nd December 1903, in Paris, France. His is often confused with Pierre Génin, who was a flutist who performed mainly in England during the early 20th century.

Génin was the Principal flute of the Theatre Italien in Paris, and of the Colonne Orchestra. In addition to writing many works for the flute (he wrote over 60 works for this instrument, he was also one of the first composers to write for the saxophone. He was an Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts

This work was first published by Richault with two other pieces (Cantilène, Opus 64 and Air Florantin, Opus 65) as Three character pieces, although the three works were sold seperately. The piano part for all three versions (for alto saxophone, Bb Clarinet or Bb cornet) remains the same.

This work was used as an examination piece at the Paris Conservatory in the class of Adolphe Sax, to whom it is dedicated. After a lyrical introduction which makes use of echo effects, a pastorale theme is presented and then treated in variations. The final variation is a virtuosic valse brillante.

Valse Sophie is a part of a series of works in the style of 1920s saxophone music in preparation of the composition of my opera Light Unto Ashes, a musical allegory about the life of Saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft to a libretto by Elizabeth Kirschner. The particular work is in the style of the typical Operetta-style Waltz that was performed by instrumental soloists in recordings and concerts during the vaudeville era in the United States. The modified Rondo form (ABACA-coda) is also similar to 19th century works such as those composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle.

Emanuele Krakamp was born in Messina in 1813. He began studying music with his father. In 1841 he was named first flute in the royal orchestra of Naples and was also named flute professor of San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in 1860. Krakamp performed concerts in Europe, America, the Middle East and North Africa. The Fantasy Opus 248 based on themes from Verdi's Opera La Traviata is part of a group of three fantasies called La triade verdiana, first published in 1865. Krakamp died in Naples in 1883.

The version for saxophone remains close to the original version for flute, with only a few register changes because of range issues. Some passages in the piano part have been re-enforced harmonically and the ending has been slightly changed, to create a more definitive ending. .
