It was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano.In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's most enduring pieces of music.The present version is a facilitated reduction of the theme where it is soloed by Alto Saxophone, along with piano accompaniment with chords that can be performed by the teacher and the ends. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast (72, 73, 111 and 156), it was the last, and the only one scored for solo voice. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different melodies and choral texts in the second and sixth (final) movements, respectively; the second uses Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt (Schein, 1628), which Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir (Binemann, 1582) is reserved for the finale. This version of the piece was adapted for Alto Saxophone along with a piano accompaniment that comes with the product.

Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家�] accent� is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “style�. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. Then, in the 1840’s he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël.  Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much the way that Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In the 1850’s John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher translated the song into English.   Adolphe Adam In his younger years, Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until his death in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire.  Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, in particular, the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau’s theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father’s plan to punish mankind.  Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to expunge the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from him poem years later, because he just didn’t believe it.  He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine referred to the Minuit as the the Marseillaise of religion.
