This is one of two instrumental versions of a challenging song for tenor and piano composed to a public domain poem of the same name by Antonio Machado (1875–1939); the other version is for horn and piano. The tone row used is the same all-interval set used by Luigi Dallapiccola in his 1954 piece Piccola Musica Notturna, hence the inspiration for the music.
