SKU: A0.1253199

Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Jeffrey Heisler. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Instructional,Multicultural,World. Score and part. 40 pages. Jeffrey Heisler #846950. Published by Jeffrey Heisler (A0.1253199).

The Sonatina, Op. 100, (arranged by saxophonist Jeffrey Heisler for soprano saxophone [or Bb clarinet] and piano) was written during Dvořák's stay in the USA in 1893, and is dedicated to his six children. On January 2, 1894, the composer wrote to his publisher Simrock: I am healthy and well, having just completed my 100th work, a sonatina for violin and piano. It is intended for the youth (dedicated to my children), but grown-ups, adults, shall enjoy themselves with it as they see fit.

Inspired by the fascinating landscape of North America and by meetings with the native inhabitants, a wealth of impressions has found its way into the movements of this sonatina. And that, accordingly, makes it a part of the teaching canon that is not only useful, but also very attractive.  Designed as a recital or pedagogical piece with great musicial depth, perfect for students and professionals alike.

Composed by Isabella Leonarda. Arranged by Michael Davis. Baroque,Classical,Early Music. Score and part. 26 pages. Michael Davis Music #918774. Published by Michael Davis Music (A0.1332002).

At the age of 16, Isabella Leonarda (1620-1703) joined an Ursuline convent in Novara, Italy where she lived until her death. She was a prolific composer with over 200 works credited to her name, most of which were sacred vocal works. In 1693, Leonarda published a collection of twelve sonatas, the Sonate à 1.2.3. e 4. Istromenti, becoming the first woman to publish instrumental sonatas. The collection contains eleven trio sonatas (for violins and continuo), and one solo sonata (for violin and continuo). Sonata Duodecima refers to the twelfth sonata from the collection, which is the one for solo violin and continuo.

This arrangement is for soprano saxophone and piano.

Composed by Brett L. Wery. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and part. 53 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #4346989. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837485).

Samuel Detweiler is a superb musician and accomplished saxophonist, equally at home in both jazz and classical idioms. Naturally, I was thrilled when Sam told me of his plans to commission a work that incorporated improvisation in what would otherwise be a neo-classical sonata form. The result is a piece that is technically demanding for most classical saxophonists but also requires a reasonable amount of proficiency in improvisation. Much of classical music is driven by development (the restatement, fragmentation, exploitation, evolution, and eventual transformation of musical ideas). In this sonata much of the development is left to the performer. The first movement is in sonata allegro form with the development being largely improvised. The second movement leaves one entire statement of the form open for improvisation much like any jazz standard. The third movement is a sonata rondo, again, leaving the development section open for improvisation.

This 17 minute piece is ideal for college and professional players.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque,Concert,Standards. Score and part. 43 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2914069. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533436).

In 1720 J. S. Bach was in the service of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen, serving as his Kapellmeister. Since the court of Anhalt-Cöthen was Calvinist, Church music was limited to congregational psalms and hymns. Bach’s work during this period consisted of writing chamber music for the Prince, who was an accomplished violinist, gambist and harpsichordist. Other works from this period include the Cello Suites, the viola da gamba sonatas, the Flute sonatas and the partita for solo flute and the Orchestral Suites.

The Sonata presented here is in the four movement “Church Sonata†style. The first five sonatas all share the same principal of Slow-Fast-Slow-Fast with a generally unified three-voice “Trio Sonata†texture. Passages which include double stops have been arranged as grace notes, which should be performed rapidly, but with a sensitivity to creating the necessary resonance which suggest implied chords.

Composed by Antonio Vivaldi. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and part. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #4633069. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550429).

Sonata No. 2 by Antonio Vivaldi - a four-movement Sonata da Chiesa. Duration: ca. 12:00, Piano score: 12 pages.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an Italian composer and violinist in the Baroque period, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. He was a major influence on many other composers of the Baroque era, and his influence can still be felt in music today.

Vivaldi's most important contribution to music history was his development of the sonata da chiesa, or church sonata. This form of composition was a variation on the Baroque sonata, and was used primarily in sacred music. It was characterized by a more lyrical approach to composition, with a focus on melody and harmonic structure. Vivaldi was one of the first composers to make use of this form, and his works set the standard for future composers. His church sonatas were written in a wide variety of keys and styles, and their influence can be heard in the works of later composers, such as J.S. Bach and Handel.

Vivaldi's influence on music history is far-reaching, and his contributions to the development of the sonata da chiesa are among his most important. His compositions are still widely performed and appreciated today, and his legacy continues to shape the music of the modern era.
